Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>leader of the PAICV Parliamentary Group (opposition) considered this Saturday that the 13th of January must rhyme with the continuous creation of conditions favorable to the \u201cconsistent improvement\u201d of the living conditions of Cape Verdeans in their own land.<\/p>\n

Joa\u0303o Baptista Pereira, who spoke at the solemn session commemorating Freedom and Democracy Day, said that the country needs \u201cmore robust\u201d economic growth, capable of generating employment and sufficient income for families, particularly its youth, and facing to emigration as an escape from poverty and the search for well-being and a dignified life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot afford to give up our young and productive force, which is so responsible for the country\u2019s development. The unification of the national market through adequate infrastructure and an effective, efficient transport system, which guarantees the internal mobility of people, goods and services between the islands, becomes urgent and indispensable to society\u201d, he pointed out.<\/p>\n

He also drew attention to the fact that the 13th of January would meet the rights of all Cape Verdeans, to the provision of quality healthcare, in a fair, accessible and effective manner, taking the opportunity to congratulate the Government and everyone Cape Verdeans for the distinction of Cape Verde by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a malaria-free country.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he stated that given the youth of Cape Verdean democracy and the condition of an island microstate, Cape Verde has all the conditions to put an end to the global trends of falling confidence in political actors and democratic institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must place the satisfaction of economic needs at the epicenter of our political action, eliminating extreme poverty, substantially reducing absolute poverty, combating corruption and the squandering of public assets in Cape Verde\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

For Joa\u0303o Baptista Pereira, the \u201c13th of January\u201d deserves to be remembered and celebrated \u201cwith joy\u201d, as a \u201creferential mark\u201d of Cape Verde’s second start in the historic and consensual project of building a developed, inclusive, sustainable country with high living standards for their children.<\/p>\n

The date, he stressed, also constitutes a \u201cgreat opportunity\u201d to reflect on Cape Verde\u2019s journey as a democratic country, aiming to jointly celebrate the achievements of democracy, without neglecting the challenges that the country faces, with a view to consolidating of its democracy.<\/p>\n

A lawyer by training, the leader of the parliamentary group of the largest opposition party asserted that Cape Verdean justice is independent, but that it is important, as a matter of urgency, to improve Cape Verdeans’ access to justice, in accordance with the Constitution, so as to to guarantee security for all citizens.<\/p>\n
