Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The General Inspection of Economic Activities (IGAE) seized a “considerable quantity” of potentially “dangerous and poisonous” products without labels and in Portuguese in commercial establishments in the city of Praia. This action was taken in response to recent reports of poisoning of dogs and cats in several regions of the country.<\/p>\n

Through a statement published today on Facebook, IGAE informed that it was a joint inspection action, with the collaboration of the General Directorate of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock (DGASP), of the Cape Verde Veterinary Doctors’ Association, ( OMVCV) and the National Police, aimed at establishments selling insecticides.<\/p>\n

During the inspection, a considerable quantity of potentially dangerous and poisonous products was identified and seized.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent times, IGAE has been receiving reports about the poisoning and \u201ckilling\u201d of dogs and cats, all over the country,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

In the statement, IGAE also informs that exposure to insecticides not only represents a threat to animals, but also to humans, since small doses over time can lead to the development of serious diseases.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe identified products are potentially dangerous and can cause this damage. Exposure to these products may be through oral contact, inhalation and even dermal contact (contact with the skin and eyes)\u201d, it reads.<\/p>\n

Therefore, IGAE and other entities appeal and draw the attention of the general population that, in addition to the dog and cat population, they are putting people’s lives at risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe poisoning and \u201ckilling\u201d of animals is not the solution to reducing stray dogs, in addition to being a barbaric act, punishable by law\u201d, he appealed.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that on the 13th, the Civil Movement of Responsible Communities (MCCR), in statements to Lusa, announced that around 3,000 dogs and cats died from poisoning in Cape Verde last year, indicating that the majority of cases occurred in Sal and in Boa Vista, the two most touristic islands in the archipelago.<\/p>\n
