Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Timorese President, Jose\u0301 Ramos-Horta, traveled today to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to participate in the ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which will mark Timor-Leste’s accession to that organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe firmly believe that our accession will boost economic reforms\u201d, said the Timorese head of state, quoted in a statement released by the Timorese Presidency.<\/p>\n

Jose\u0301 Ramos-Horta leads the Timor-Leste delegation that will formalize the WTO accession treaty on Monday, after the organization announced its approval by consensus in January, following the conclusion of the seventh meeting of the Working Group.<\/p>\n

Timor-Leste formalized its application to join the WTO in 2016 and the first meeting of the Working Group took place in October 2020. According to the statement, at the WTO ministerial conference, the Timorese President will \u201cemphasize Timor-Leste’s commitment East in using membership to improve infrastructure, human capital and administrative capacity to accelerate economic growth and diversification of the economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cTimor-Leste\u2019s accession to the WTO marks an important step towards the liberalization of trade, integration into the global economy and facilitating access to international markets\u201d, highlights the Timorese Presidency.<\/p>\n

From the United Arab Emirates, Jose\u0301 Ramos-Horta will head to Laos, where he will carry out a state visit between February 27th and March 3rd to reinforce cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cTimor-Leste greatly appreciates Laos\u2019 consistent support for our ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] candidacy and intends to gain insight from the experienced leadership of Laos,\u201d which assumed the rotating presidency of the organization this year, said President Ramos- Horta, mentioned in the statement.<\/p>\n
