Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verde, in first, and Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe, in third, are among the highest ranked countries in Africa in terms of respect for political rights and civil liberties, with Angola appearing as “not free”, in the report released today by Freedom House.<\/p>\n

Mauritius is the second highest ranked country in Africa, according to the 51st annual edition of the \u201cFreedom in the World\u201d report, launched today by the think tank based in in Washington, which in the case of the African continent highlights the decline of freedom for the tenth consecutive year.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreedom in Africa has declined for the tenth consecutive year in 2023, due to armed conflicts, military coups and electoral irregularities\u201d, considers Freedom House.<\/p>\n

Freedom House highlights that, in general, freedom in Africa has decreased, as 14 countries recorded a decrease in scores compared to five that recorded improvements.<\/p>\n

Niger recorded the sharpest drop in score (-18 points), after military forces deposed the elected government and Liberia recorded the biggest improvement in score (+4 points) on the continent.<\/p>\n

The report includes scores (0 to 100) and detailed national reports on political rights and civil liberties for 195 countries and 15 territories around the world.<\/p>\n

Regarding Portuguese-speaking African countries, Angola and Equatorial Guinea are classified as \u201cnot free\u201d, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique as \u201cpartially free\u201d and Cape Verde (92) and Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe (84) as \u201cfree \u201d.<\/p>\n

South Sudan (1), Eritrea (3), Equatorial Guinea (5) and the Central African Republic (5) are the lowest-ranked countries on the continent.<\/p>\n

The report states that only 7% of people in Africa live in free countries, while 50% live in non-free countries.<\/p>\n
