The individuals, all male, are well and all have Malian nationality, said the regional commander of Civil Protection, Vito\u0301ria Veri\u0301ssimo, today.<\/p>\n

The vessel washed ashore in the north of Bai\u0301a, in the drag zone. Still on the ground, together with the National Police and the Health Department, the person responsible provided the first information to Ra\u0301dio Morabeza.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a vessel that washed ashore with 11 people, all male. We are currently here with the teams carrying out the intervention. They are stable, conscious, they are being evaluated by the Health Department and then taken to the city to carry out all the logistics and then the National Police and the Judiciary Police carry out the normal investigation process\u201d, he points out.<\/p>\n

Vito\u0301ria Veri\u0301ssimo states that the alert arrived at Civil Protection, through the National Police, at around 7:15 in the morning.<\/p>\n

Regarding the four survivors of the pirogue that washed ashore in the Calhau area, also in Sa\u0303o Vicente, last Sunday, the person responsible informs that they have already been discharged.<\/p>\n

In this case, the authorities removed five bodies from the boat, two in an advanced state of decomposition, and took five \u201cvery weak\u201d men to Baptista Sousa Hospital, in Mindelo, one of whom ended up dying. The two Malians, a Senegalese and a citizen of Mauritania have already recovered.<\/p>\n

Cape Verde has occasionally been a destination for drifting vessels with people risking their lives in precarious boats, on the high seas, to reach Europe, escaping poverty and violence.<\/p>\n

Three other cases have been recorded in the last 16 months. In November 2022, a boat with 66 Senegalese immigrants washed ashore on the island of Sal. In January 2023, a pirogue arrived on the island of Boa Vista with 90 African migrants on board, two of them dead. A boat that left Senegal in July 2023, with 101 people, was found adrift near the island of Sal, Cape Verde, in August, with 38 survivors, assisted and repatriated.<\/p>\n
