Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Cape Verdean prime minister and leader of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) said today that it is necessary to combat gender inequalities in politics, after the party presented the list heads for local councils, without women.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have [women] in parliament and in other bodies in the country, but we still have battles to fight\u201d, said the head of the Government, adding that he would like to have a woman at the head of the list.<\/p>\n

\u201c I would like to have more women candidates, women who can not only represent, but win elections and govern well. We hope that in the next elections we can be better rated in this airline \u201d, highlighted Ulisses Correia e Silva.<\/p>\n

Still, Correia e Silva said that Cape Verde has a political system where women participate, thanks to the parity law.<\/p>\n

In the case of local elections, legislation requires that at least 40% of candidates be women.<\/p>\n

The law also defines that the first two places on the lists must be \u201coccupied by candidates of a different sex, and no more than two candidates of the same sex can be placed consecutively in the ranking of the remaining places\u201d.<\/p>\n

In other words, the second place on the MpD lists to run for chambers this year will be occupied by women.<\/p>\n

Jassira Monteiro, the only woman to preside over a municipality in the archipelago (Santa Catarina de Santiago), was left out of the MpD’s choices, after assuming leadership in the municipality in 2020, after the death of mayor Jose\u0301 Alves Fernandes.<\/p>\n

Correia e Silva said that the MpD defined a regulation to choose candidates and that it will count on Jassira Monteiro \u201cfor other functions\u201d.<\/p>\n

The MpD will bet on the Minister of Culture and the Sea, Abraa\u0303o Vicente, to win back Praia, the country’s capital, while in Santa Catarina do Fogo the candidate is the Secretary of State for Health, Evando Monteiro.<\/p>\n

Because of these two departures, Ulisses Correia e Silva guaranteed that \u201c there will be adjustments \u201d in the Government.<\/p>\n

The party runs 14 municipal councils and decided to re-candidate nine of the mayors.<\/p>\n

In turn, the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), the largest parliamentary opposition party, heads eight local authorities and plans to present the heads of the list by the end of the month.<\/p>\n

The National Elections Commission (CNE) of Cape Verde proposed on Tuesday that local elections take place in November, with the Government being responsible for setting the date.<\/p>\n
