Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) said Friday night, in Santo Anta\u0303o, that this year is \u201cvery special\u201d for his party, as it is the year of local elections in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n

Ulisses Correia e Silva, who was speaking at the ceremony commemorating the 34th anniversary of the founding of the MpD, which took place in the city of Porto Novo, said that the party has already chosen \u201cgood candidates\u201d for mayors to \u201cwin and govern well \u201d the municipalities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe MpD has already chosen good mayors, it will choose good candidates for presidents of municipal assemblies. The objective is to win to govern the municipalities well and respond to the desires and expectations of Cape Verdeans\u201d, he stated.<\/p>\n

For Ulisses Correia e Silva, \u201cmore than ever\u201d, the MpD must be \u201cunited and cohesive, since working together \u201cthere is no PAICV that can beat the MpD\u201d, which will compete with \u201cgood candidates and good programs and has the people\u2019s trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MpD marked its 34th anniversary in Santo Anta\u0303o with the presence of national and local leaders, as well as the party’s national deputies, who are on the island for decentralized parliamentary days.<\/p>\n

For the party leader, celebrating the MpD’s anniversary in Santo Anta\u0303o is \u201cvery special, as it was on this island that the first cry for freedom echoed throughout the country\u201d, which were the events of August 31, 1981.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, it is very symbolic and fair to celebrate the anniversary of the MpD in Santo Anta\u0303o, an island that rhymes very well with freedoms and democracy\u201d, noted Ulisses Correia e Silva, for whom his party, founded in 1990, with political openness in Cape Verde, Cape Verde has \u201cin fact changed\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we are a reference democracy at a global level. We are a freer country in Africa and none of this would be possible without the 13th of January 1991 [date of the first free elections in Cape Verde], without the Constitution of the Republic of 1992 and without the MpD\u201d, he said, also highlighting the fact that the archipelago is one of the best countries on the African continent in terms of economic freedoms.<\/p>\n

Thirty-four after its creation, the MpD \u201cremains strong\u201d, said the leader of the party in power, believing that due to the \u201ctrust\u201d enjoyed by Cape Verdeans, the MpD will \u201ccontinue to be the party with the majority of municipal councils \u201d in this year\u2019s municipal elections.<\/p>\n

Still in his speech, to hundreds of MpD leaders and activists, Ulisses Correia e Silva recognized \u201cthe work\u201d of the mayors elected by this party, who are not candidates for their own succession, namely Orlando Delgado, Anto\u0301nio Aleixo, Alberto Nunes, Jassira Monteiro and Jose\u0301 Freitas.<\/p>\n

When referring to Jassira Monteiro, the president of the Santa Catarina de Santiago City Council, the MpD leader praised the \u201cwork\u201d she has done \u201cfor Santa Catarina\u201d, adding that she \u201cremains engaged\u201d despite all the \u201c attempts to create a feeling of revolt\u201d as she is the only woman to preside over a municipal council in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n

The celebrations of the 34th anniversary of the founding of the MpD in Santo Anta\u0303o, for the party president, represent \u201cthe launch of a journey towards the next victories\u201d, assuming as \u201cthe objective and commitment\u201d to win this year\u2019s local authorities and the legislative 2026.<\/p>\n

As part of the celebrations, Ulisses Correia e Silva paid tribute to several MpD activists in Santo Anta\u0303o.<\/p>\n
