Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The report \u201cStudent Profile of Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP) in Higher Education Institutions in Portugal\u201d, covering the period from 2015 to 2021, reveals that Cape Verde stands out as the second PALOP country with the largest number of candidates enrolled in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Portugal. With a total of 22,592 registered, the country shows a preference for areas such as Business Sciences and Administration, Engineering and Related Technologies, and Health.<\/p>\n

According to the report now revealed, of the total of 22,592 enrolled, 9,158 are in university education, of which 5,106 are women and 4,052 men. In polytechnic education, 13,434 students are enrolled, 7,525 women and 5,909 men.<\/p>\n

Cape Verdean students show a preference for certain educational institutions. Among polytechnic institutes, the most notable are the Instituto Polite\u0301cnico de Braganc\u0327a (5,361 students), followed by the Instituto Polite\u0301cnico de Lisboa (1,096) and the Instituto Polite\u0301cnico de Castelo Branco (994).<\/p>\n

As for the most sought after universities, the University of Lisbon, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the University of E\u0301vora stand out.<\/p>\n

Regarding the most popular areas of study among Cape Verdean students in Portugal, the main ones are Business Sciences and Administration (4,481 students), Engineering and Related Technologies (3,731) and Health (2,722).<\/p>\n

The report also addresses the number of enrollees per study cycle. In the doctoral\/3rd cycle course, there are 736 Cape Verdean students, 432 men and 304 women.<\/p>\n

In the master’s\/2nd cycle, 5,634 students are enrolled, 3,096 women and 2,538 men. In the undergraduate\/1st cycle course, 14,058 students are enrolled, with 8,070 women and 5,988 men.<\/p>\n

Also noteworthy is the leadership of the Instituto Polite\u0301cnico de Braganc\u0327a as the institution most sought after by Cape Verdean students in terms of number of enrollees.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the report mentions the presence of Cape Verdean students in specialization, post-degree, technological specialization and Higher Professional Technical courses, highlighting the diversity of study areas explored by this academic community in Portugal.<\/p>\n

Clara Carvalho, from the Center for International Studies at the University Institute of Lisbon, explained to Lusa that some institutions implement a \u201cZero Semester\u201d, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the pedagogy and the education system, which has proven to be very effective.<\/p>\n

The report concluded that African students do not face a lack of academic skills, but they do face significant integration challenges due to unfamiliarity with content, teaching method and often language barriers, in addition to economic difficulties in many cases.<\/p>\n

Among the recommendations, the authors suggest the creation of entrance tests for students in special regimes who have not taken national exams in their countries, as well as the implementation of a preparation and integration period or a Year Zero for students with no previous experience in exams. in Portugal.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, measures such as streamlining the visa process and establishing direct contacts between institutions from different countries are proposed to facilitate the integration of students.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the higher education system in Portugal has recorded a significant increase in the number of PALOP students, with emphasis on a 900% increase between 2015 and 2021 among Guinean students.<\/p>\n

The report points to Angola as the country with the highest number of students in Portugal during the period analyzed (2015-2021), although Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau have been the countries with the greatest growth in recent years, being today the two countries with the most students.<\/p>\n
