Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verde still has a shortage of veterinarians due to the number of animals that exist in the archipelago and area of \u200b\u200bactivity, noted this Saturday the president of the Order of Veterinary Doctors of Cape Verde (OMVCV).<\/p>\n

Sandy Freire made this observation in an interview with Inforpress regarding World Veterinary Medicine Day, which takes place this Saturday, stating that territorial dispersion makes the situation even more difficult in terms of having veterinarians on all the islands.<\/p>\n

The president indicated that there are only 23 active veterinarians practicing in the national territory, in addition to pointing out other challenges facing veterinary medicine, such as the problem of legally exercising the profession and the unattractive market, arguing that there is a need for more young people trained in this area and creating conditions in some structures.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to value the class, because sometimes people don’t know what veterinary medicine is, limiting themselves to linking this area to the care of dogs and cats, or horses or cows in clinics, and they don’t see veterinary medicine as a whole\u201d, he stated.<\/p>\n

It is a profession, as explained by the president, with several areas of activity, including public health, taking into account that, as she exemplified, veterinarians are also responsible for the production and control of everything of animal origin that humans consume.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to carry out strict control, because 70 percent (%) of the new diseases that appear in the world are of animal origin, so it is also important to highlight the veterinarian’s work in the laboratory, in research and many other functions\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

Sandy Freire called on all professionals in the field in Cape Verde to continue fighting to have a more recognized and valued class.<\/p>\n

For young people who intend to embark on this area in case of any doubts, the president suggests that they contact the order, for clarification, and the State urges the promotion of a more favorable environment and the valorization of the class.<\/p>\n

For the president, the celebration of World Veterinary Medicine Day \u201cis important\u201d, justifying that it is a way of raising awareness among the population about the exercise of the profession.<\/p>\n

He considers that the motto chosen for this year \u201cis relevant\u201d as it draws attention to the importance of veterinarians in general health, that is, human, animal and environmental.<\/p>\n

The Order of Veterinary Doctors of Cape Verde was created in 2016, with one of its main objectives being to defend the practice of the veterinary profession and support the professional interests of its members.<\/p>\n
