Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The presidents of Portugal and Cape Verde today removed the specter of reparations and celebrated a \u201crelationship of excellence\u201d, \u201cwithout taboos\u201d, when speaking at a meeting with the Portuguese community, in Praia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be no storm in the future regarding the debates we can have. Cape Verde and Portugal understand each other very well. The relationships are excellent, very mature. And from all our discussions, new light can emerge to build a new future\u201d, said PR Jose\u0301 Maria Neves.<\/p>\n

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa described the welcome in the archipelago as something that \u201c has no qualifications. It is more than a mere fraternity, it is a complicity \u201d that responds to \u201c some anxieties \u201d that may exist about the past.<\/p>\n

\u201c I have the feeling that we get along better than last time. Cooperation is better \u201d, as well as \u201c sharing and partnership between the two countries and governments is better \u201d, he added, after, during the afternoon, mentioning that the reparations that Portugal owes to the former colonies are already being implemented through of bilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI even get worried because, normally, when everything is going at this level of excellence, we start to think: what could go a little less well? But we couldn\u2019t find anything\u201d, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.<\/p>\n

During the reception for the Portuguese community at the residence of the Portuguese ambassador in Cape Verde, Marcelo then told his counterpart Jose\u0301 Maria Neves to assume the protocol role usually reserved for the Portuguese President and be the last to speak.<\/p>\n

The Cape Verdean head of state alluded to the questions that have been asked by journalists about Marcelo’s statements regarding reparations, to say that \u201cthere are no taboo topics in democracy \u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c And, between us, with the maturity we already have, we can talk like people who understand each other \u201d, he said, after, during the day, having referred the topic for a \u201cserene\u201d debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be no storm in the future regarding the debates we can have. Cape Verde and Portugal understand each other very well. The relationships are excellent, very mature. And from all our discussions, new light can still emerge to build a new future ,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Jose\u0301 Maria Neves wants Portugal to \u201c continue to be this lighthouse country \u201d, whose revolution \u201c turned into carnations\u201d and promoted democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201c I am sure that together we will continue to follow this path of strengthening freedoms and affirming democracy \u201d, he concluded.<\/p>\n

The two heads of state will be together again on Wednesday for the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Tarrafal concentration camp, in which the President of Guinea-Bissau, Sissoco Embalo, and the Minister of Defense of Angola will also participate in representation of the head of state, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o.<\/p>\n
