Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Movement for Democracy (MpD \u2013 power) admitted this Friday, 3rd, the need for \u201cclose\u201d monitoring of the Social Communication sector, aiming for better policy measures that allow for higher indicators in the Press Freedom Index ranking.<\/p>\n

This consideration comes from the deputy secretary general of the MpD, Vanuza Barbosa, during a press conference following the publication of the Reporters without Borders (RSF) report that places Cape Verde in position 41, out of a total of 180 countries and territories , with a score of 72.77, a position that, according to the same source, is \u201crelatively good\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are indicators in which we have progressed and others where there is a need for improvements. Cape Verde has, over successive years, been scoring points in reports on press freedom, through the adoption of policy measures, aimed at increasing freedom and autonomy in the sector\u201d, highlighted the person in charge.<\/p>\n

Taking into account the dynamic nature of these indicators, Vanuza Barbosa reiterated the need for permanent and close monitoring of the sector, to introduce more and better policy measures that allow us to reach the top positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite this latest result, we believe that a lot has been done to achieve this goal\u201d, he said, highlighting some measures that the Government has introduced to improve the media sector in the country.<\/p>\n

Of these measures, he highlights the approval of the new statutes of the Social Communication Regulatory Agency (ARC), approval of the new Cape Verde Radio and Television Statutes of 2019, which, as he said, gave \u201cgreater independence\u201d to the stations, introduction of a favorable framework for incentives for the development of private press in Cape Verde, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese actions reflect our commitment to creating an environment conducive to the development and improvement of the press in Cape Verde\u201d, he highlighted, renewing, that the MpD is \u201ccommitted\u201d to working in close collaboration with all interested parties to ensure that freedom of the press continues to be protected and promoted in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cReaffirm, as a party of freedom and democracy, our unshakable commitment to press freedom, an essential and fundamental principle that we fervently defend, recognizing it as a central pillar of our democracy\u201d, he concluded.<\/p>\n
