Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Government approved the Incentive Program for Protected Cultivation – Agricultural Greenhouses, which will include an investment of 185,790,000 escudos to support farmers across the country in the acquisition and installation of greenhouses.<\/p>\n

In the Official Bulletin this Wednesday, 15th, the Government justifies that agriculture in Cape Verde faces significant challenges due to climate aridity, water scarcity and adverse conditions that impact food security and family income.<\/p>\n

Thus, the Government Program 2021-2026 prioritizes the modernization of the agricultural sector as one of the main pillars of development, which requires investments in smart and resilient technologies to increase productivity with the same water and land resources and under the same climatic conditions.<\/p>\n

Among the most profitable agricultural sectors in the country, fruit and vegetable growing stands out for generating direct jobs and boosting other subsectors of the production chain, such as the sale of inputs, production and transport.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe introduction of new technologies, such as micro-irrigation and protected cultivation, has resulted in increased income and production, as well as improvements in the quality of products and their availability throughout the year\u201d, says the Government.<\/p>\n

Despite these advances, the executive explains that the agricultural sector faces financing difficulties, as small farmers, who represent 96% of farms, have difficulty accessing traditional credit mechanisms due to the resistance and risk aversion of the national banking system.<\/p>\n

Recognizing these difficulties, the Government decided to implement a program to support farmers in the acquisition and installation of agricultural greenhouses, offering a subsidy of 50% of the costs of materials and installation.<\/p>\n

The recently approved Incentive Program for Protected Cultivation – Agricultural Greenhouses, with a total amount of 185,790,000 escudos, has national coverage and is aimed at all farmers interested in agricultural production in a protected cultivation system.<\/p>\n

This program will be financed by the Emergency Food Production Program (PPAU – Cabo Verde\/A EPPP), within the scope of the loan agreement signed between the Republic of Cape Verde and the African Development Bank (ADB).<\/p>\n

The initiative aims to promote and boost agricultural production and productivity, especially vegetable and fruit crops, and will be in force for a period of twenty-four months, after which it will be evaluated and possibly continued.<\/p>\n
