Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The European Commission today announced a significant increase in prices for Schengen visas. From today onwards, the fees for obtaining these visas will increase by 12%.<\/p>\n

With this update, the base fee for a Schengen visa for adults rises from the current 80 to 90 euros, while for children the fee will increase from 40 to 45 euros. The European Commission (EC) justifies this increase with inflation in the Member States.<\/p>\n

The EC assesses visa fees every three years, and may increase them based on \u201cobjective criteria\u201d, such as inflation rates. The proposal to increase prices had been presented in February, following a meeting held in December last year, where Member States supported the review by an \u201coverwhelming majority\u201d.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Commission has proposed that external Schengen visa providers may adjust their fees in line with this review. Currently, the maximum amount that these providers, such as visa agencies, can charge is generally half the standard fee. The EC suggested increasing this value from 40 to 45 euros.<\/p>\n

However, the fees for extending a Schengen visa will remain fixed at 30 euros.<\/p>\n

The European Union is also considering additional increases for countries that demonstrate \u201cinsufficient cooperation on readmission\u201d, that is, that do not accept the re-entry of people expelled from Member States. For these countries, the cost may increase from 120 to 135 euros and from 160 to 180 euros.<\/p>\n

Schengen visas are required for citizens of third countries who do not benefit from the 90-day rule of the EU\/Schengen area. These countries include South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China, among others. These visas are used for tourism or visiting family and friends, but cannot be used to work in the 28 European countries in the Schengen area. With a Schengen visa, it is possible to visit the area for a maximum of 90 days within a six-month period.<\/p>\n

Citizens of countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia do not need a Schengen visa for short visits, due to the right to 90 days of visa-free travel in every 180 days. However, those who wish to stay longer or work will have to apply for a specific visa from the destination country.<\/p>\n
