Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verdean judge Ricardo Gonc\u0327alves has been elected President of the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for a two-year term.<\/p>\n

Ricardo Gonc\u0327alves succeeds Judge Edward Amoako Asante, who has headed the Court since 31 July 2018.<\/p>\n

The magistrate was chosen by the court’s five-judge panel for a two-year term, succeeding Edward Amoako Asante (Ghana).<\/p>\n

In the same election, Judge Sengu Mohamed Koroma (Sierra Leone) was also chosen as Vice-President of the Court.<\/p>\n

Ricardo Monteiro Gonc\u0327alves was the Director of the Judicial Police (PJ) of Cape Verde, a position he left in 2022, when he was appointed and sworn in as a judge of the ECOWAS Court of Justice for a four-year term.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva and Minister of Justice Joana Rosa congratulated Ricardo Gonc\u0327alves on his election.<\/p>\n

\u201cI congratulate Judge Ricardo Gonc\u0327alves on his election as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice for a two-year term,\u201d the PM wrote.<\/p>\n

The ECOWAS court, based in Abuja, Nigeria, is composed of five judges \u201cappointed by the Authority of Heads of State and Government from among the nationals of the member states for a four-year term, on the recommendation of the Judicial Council,\u201d according to information from the institution itself.<\/p>\n
