Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>US President Joe Biden reiterated his support for \u201cthe creation of two permanent seats for African countries\u201d on the United Nations Security Council in Cape Verde on Monday, according to a White House statement. The topic was discussed during a meeting with Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva at Ami\u0301lcar Cabral Airport on Sal Island, during a stopover on Biden\u2019s flight to Angola, where a three-day visit begins today. Biden reiterated his support for \u201cexpanding the United Nations Security Council\u201d along these lines, increasing \u201cthe representation of global voices to address global issues,\u201d he added. Despite having been on the table for over 30 years, reform of the Security Council remains to be done. The body is made up of five permanent members with veto power \u2013 the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia \u2013 and 10 members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms, distributed across different geographical and continental representation groups. During the meeting, Biden also expressed gratitude for Cape Verde’s \u201cunwavering support for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself from aggression\u201d triggered by the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n

It was the first time that a sitting US President had visited Cape Verde, a fact that Ulisses Correia e Silva had already described as \u201chistoric\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe prospects for a continued good relationship with the United States of America were highlighted here\u201d, he told journalists.<\/p>\n
