Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The parliamentary group of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition) today expressed its \u201cindignant and embarrassed\u201d with the recent government reshuffle, stating that the new cast \u201cdiscriminates against women and is not equitable\u201d.<\/p>\n

The criticism was made by MP Paula Moeda, at a press conference held today to review the preparatory day for the second plenary session scheduled for the 26th to 28th of this month, which will include a debate with the Prime Minister on public policies for Cape Verdean women.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this moment we are indignant, embarrassed by the latest government reshuffle in which the Prime Minister presents society with a non-equitable Government in which women have clearly been discriminated against\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

The MP analyzed the current situation of Cape Verdean women, despite the progress made over the years, and noted \u201clow female participation in politics\u201d, which highlights, as she said, the need to continue promoting gender equality and the inclusion of women in decision-making spaces.<\/p>\n

She lamented the \u201clack of opportunities\u201d for women \u201cwith potential\u201d and the lack of parity in the recent government reshuffle, considering it a setback after the advances achieved in previous governments.<\/p>\n

However, she explained that the parity law, in force since 2019, needs an \u201curgent review\u201d, especially in article 4, which deals with equal representation.<\/p>\n

For Paula Moeda, the current situation of Cape Verdean women \u201cis sad\u201d and continues \u201cunfortunately to be the face of poverty and vulnerability\u201d.<\/p>\n

The deputy asked where the daycare centers and kindergartens promised by the State are, highlighting the need to invest more in childhood to benefit family life and provide women with the time necessary for their empowerment.<\/p>\n

Regarding the proposed review of the Electoral Code, she said that this is the fifth modification, having already been discussed previously, with her party having presented several proposals.<\/p>\n

\u201c(….) We know that it is something very important and of great responsibility because it also revokes some provisions of the Electoral Code and also affects and will, therefore, automatically change the status of municipalities\u201d, she pointed out.<\/p>\n

When asked about the Gender-Based Violence Law, she said that it \u201chad gains and setbacks\u201d and that at the moment \u201cit requires adjustments and changes to recover the advances and go much further\u201d.<\/p>\n
