Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Boa Vista City Council is currently holding a literature week with a variety of activities, and one of the highlights was the launch of the second edition of the book “Filhas da Viole\u0302ncia” by writer Miriam Medina.<\/p>\n

The initiative aims to encourage the habit of reading, promote literary production and promote debate on relevant social issues in the Boa Vista community.<\/p>\n

The coordinator of the Municipal Library, Ronilda Oliveira, in a statement to the press, highlighted the municipality’s ongoing commitment to dedicating the month of April to celebrating books, which has been going on for two years now.<\/p>\n

Ronilda Oliveira highlighted the diversity of activities, from stories for children in different locations, with the aim of encouraging access to books and also developing an aptitude and taste for reading, to the work of Miriam Medina, aimed at a more adult audience.<\/p>\n

Regarding the importance of the work launched on the evening of Wednesday the 23rd, she highlighted the \u201csensitivity and commitment\u201d of the municipality in demonstrating the importance of books and libraries.<\/p>\n

“And today we saw the power of books, the way they transform people, books give people voices, books share stories that touch and transform people”, summarized the same source.<\/p>\n

The presenter of “Filhas da Viole\u0302ncia”, Rosinda Santos, who studied Modern Languages \u200b\u200band Literature, mentioned the statistics on violence and sexual assault in Boa Vista, which indicate “an increase”, as there were 11 reports in 2023, 25 in 2024, and, in the first quarter of 2025, there were already eight reports.<\/p>\n

Ninety percent (90%) of the cases end in conviction.<\/p>\n

Rosinda Santos gave a personal touch to the presentation, making the book “hers” also because she is a victim who today feels she has the responsibility to speak about the subject.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to talk about these issues in order to resolve them, because if we don\u2019t talk about them, everything remains hushed up (…) There has to be knowledge in order to take action,\u201d stated Rosinda Santos.<\/p>\n

The author, Miriam Medina, expressed her gratitude for the invitation from the chamber, which coincided with the Day of the Book, the Author and the Teacher.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was a happy coincidence, precisely on this day, with such a sensitive topic as violence against children and adolescents,\u201d stated the author.<\/p>\n

Medina shared her motivation to continue writing about sensitive topics, considering it a \u201clife mission\u201d to bring to light \u201cpertinent and urgent issues\u201d that should be discussed \u201cwithout any taboos\u201d.<\/p>\n

She called on institutions to embrace this social scientific work, which is carried out in the field, because institutions alone and not even the State \u201ccan handle everything\u201d.<\/p>\n

During literature week, open and intimate conversations will also be held with the author and children and teenagers at the high school, schools and ICCA delegation on the island, and the Municipal Library will host a book fair until the end of the month, with “a very symbolic price” and “accessible to everyone” as announced.<\/p>\n
