Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verde is the guest country at the 21st MED Festival, which takes place in June in Loule\u0301, Algarve, and whose program includes music, gastronomy, cinema and visual arts, the organization announced this Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cMornas, cachupa, tabanca, pano di terra, grogue, funana\u0301 and much more: the sounds, colors and flavors of the Cape Verde Archipelago will set up camp in the Historic Area of \u200b\u200bLoule\u0301, from June 26 to 29, at the 21st edition of the MED Festival\u201d, according to the festival’s organization.<\/p>\n

The MED program for the guest country of this year’s edition was revealed on Tuesday, at a press conference at the Cabo Verde Cultural Center, in Lisbon.<\/p>\n

Cape Verde will present \u201cits musical, cultural and gastronomic diversity, through various events throughout the festival days\u201d. Something that, for the director of the MED Festival, Carlos Carmo, \u201callows us to create an even more diverse and global programme, bringing the excellence of Cape Verdean culture to Loule\u0301\u201d.<\/p>\n

The musical program includes a concert in tribute to Cape Verdean singer Sara Tavares, who died in November 2023. The show features the participation of Shout, the Banda Filarmo\u0302nica Sociedade Artistas de Minerva, the Mau Feitio project and other musicians, whose names will be announced soon.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, performances by Ceuzany, Ferro Gaita, Dino D\u2019Santiago with Tubaro\u0303es, and the Cesa\u0301ria E\u0301vora Orquestra, \u201ca project that celebrates and keeps alive the work of the legendary \u2018Barefoot Diva\u2019\u201d, have been confirmed.<\/p>\n

Cesa\u0301ria E\u0301vora’s name also appears in the Cinema MED programme, which includes three films with links to Cape Verde: \u201cSodade\u201d, by Sarah Grace, which \u201cexplores deep themes such as love, betrayal and hate, through the story of characters who experience the challenges and dilemmas of the diaspora\u201d, \u201cCesa\u0301ria E\u0301vora\u201d, a documentary by Ana Sofia Fonseca about the life and career of the \u201cgreatest voice of Cape Verde\u201d, and \u201cKme\u0302deus\u201d, by Nuno Boaventura Miranda, which \u201cportrays the intriguing story of an eccentric homeless man from the Island of Sa\u0303o Vicente, known by many as crazy and by others as a great artist\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the festival, the exhibition \u201cCartographies Transatlantic\u201d will be on display at the Espi\u0301rito Santo Gallery, bringing together works by Fidel E\u0301vora, Jacira da Conceic\u0327a\u0303o, Amadeu Carvalho and Carlos Noronha Feio, \u201cfour artists whose connection with Cape Verde is simultaneously intimate and displaced\u201d, since \u201cthey live outside the Archipelago, but build an ongoing dialogue with it \u2014 sometimes silent, but always present\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Cloister of the Convent of Espi\u0301rito Santo, in the center of Loule\u0301, will house the \u201cPa\u0301tio\u201d, a space where \u201call artistic manifestations will converge\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the MED, it will be possible to watch weaving, breadmaking, pottery and basketry being worked live, taste typical Cape Verdean food and drink, and listen to musicians playing batuque and cavaquinho live.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, \u201cthrough the streets and alleys of the Historic Area of \u200b\u200bLoule\u0301, entertainment groups will parade, bringing some of the artistic manifestations and traditional rhythms such as tabanca, sa\u0303o djon, batuque and txabeta, mixing dances and drums\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the space dedicated to the \u2018junior\u2019 public, MED Kids, storyteller Adriano Reis will share Cape Verdean tales and children\u2019s games.<\/p>\n

For the mayor of Loule\u0301, Vi\u0301tor Aleixo, this year\u2019s edition of the MED \u201cbecomes even more special with Cape Verde as the guest country\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLoule\u0301 has a large Cape Verdean community and, in this sense, having this event under the banner of the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde\u2019s independence will be a source of great joy. On the other hand, this multidisciplinary program is of incalculable importance for promoting the culture of a country with which we have such strong ties,\u201d said the mayor.<\/p>\n

Cape Verde Independence Day is celebrated on July 5th.<\/p>\n

In March, Loule\u0301 City Council, which organizes the MED Festival, announced that this year the festival will feature \u201c90 hours of music, 54 concerts, 338 musicians, 27 nationalities, 12 stages, 100 craft exhibitors, two art exhibitions and 12 groups of street artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program includes Salvador Sobral, who will perform with the Spanish artist Si\u0301lvia Pe\u0301rez Cruz, Carminho, O Gajo & As Sanfonas da Ponte Velha, Stereossauro, Ana Lua Caiano and Pedro Joia, the last three in a project prepared for the festival.<\/p>\n

The Malian Vieux Farka Toure\u0301, Jeneile Osborne, better known as Queen Omega, from Trinidad and Tobago, the Puerto Rican iLe, the Welsh Cerys Hafana, the Portuguese Milhana, A Garota Na\u0303o, Valter Lobo will also be present at the MED.<\/p>\n

Systema Solar (Colombia), Barrut (France), Balqeis (Egypt), Fulu Miziki (Democratic Republic of Congo), Sofian Saidi (Algeria), Justin Adams & Mauro Durante (United Kingdom\/Italy), Shkoon (Syria\/Germany), Alain Pe\u0301rez y la Orquesta (Cuba), Paulo Flores (Angola), Tarwa-N-Tiniri (Morocco) are also confirmed on 21 MED.<\/p>\n
