Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment are promoting, this Monday, 21, in Praia, a campaign to plant fruit trees, to mark the International Day of Forests.<\/p>\n

The initiative, as announced by FAO in Cape Verde, will take place on the campus of the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), as part of the project \u201cReinforcement of adaptive capacity and resilience in the forestry sector in Cape Verde (Reflor-CV).<\/p>\n

The purpose of commemorating the International Day of Forests, 21 March, this year under the motto \u201cForests and sustainable production and consumption\u201d, is to draw attention to the need for more action to stop deforestation and degradation.<\/p>\n

The celebration of the date serves to make people aware of the importance of forests for the planet, the preservation of trees, both in terms of environmental and ecological balance, as well as the quality of life of citizens.<\/p>\n

According to the same source, the world has lost 420 million hectares of forest, an area larger than India since 1990, and deforestation continues at around 10 million hectares per year, mainly due to agricultural expansion.<\/p>\n

Sustainable forest management can help reduce deforestation and degradation, restore degraded landscapes, and provide people with renewable jobs and materials.<\/p>\n

Reflor-CV is a project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, financed by the European Union and executed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in the amount of five million euros.<\/p>\n

Its main objective is to increase resilience and adaptability to face the additional risks posed by climate change in desertification and land degradation in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n
