Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The municipality of Tarrafal de Sa\u0303o Nicolau, established in 2005, celebrates its 20th anniversary today, and the celebrations will culminate with a formal session that will begin at 9:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

According to existing data, the municipality of Tarrafal was created by law 67\/VI\/2005, which detached part of the territory from the former municipality of Sa\u0303o Nicolau, forming a new municipality.<\/p>\n

The main economic activities carried out by the population are fishing and livestock farming.<\/p>\n

During the transition period, the municipality was governed by an installation commission, and the first municipal elections were held on May 18, 2008.<\/p>\n

The municipality occupies the southwestern part of Sa\u0303o Nicolau, with an area of 121.5 square kilometers and comprises seven towns.<\/p>\n

The city of Tarrafal is home to the Sucla canning factory and the island’s former concentration camp, as well as the black sand beaches, formerly used for medicinal purposes.<\/p>\n

According to the 2021 census results from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the municipality of Tarrafal de Sa\u0303o Nicolau has a resident population of 5,217, 52 percent of whom are male and 48 percent female, representing 42.8 percent of the island’s population and 1 percent of Cape Verde’s population.<\/p>\n

According to IBGE data, unemployment affects 25 percent of young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Regarding living conditions, 91.1 percent of residents have access to electricity and 92.8 percent have access to public water.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the municipal festivities, the city hall is hosting a range of cultural and sporting activities, including the launch of some ongoing projects.<\/p>\n

The celebrations will culminate today with a formal ceremony that will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Paulino Vieira Cultural Center [AA1].<\/p>\n

Speeches are planned from the mayors and municipal assembly presidents, the leaders of the three political parties \u2013 PAICV, MpD and MI Tarrafal \u2013 and also from the Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, Augusto Veiga, representing the Government.<\/p>\n
