Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>UN-Habitat’s Regional Director for Africa, Oumar Sylla, reaffirmed today his commitment to supporting the Cape Verdean Government and local communities with effective solutions and tools to combat climate change.<\/p>\n

Oumar Sylla made these remarks this morning after being received in an audience by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, as part of his four-day visit to the country to deepen and consolidate technical cooperation between Cape Verde and UN-Habitat.<\/p>\n

“UN-Habitat came today to reaffirm its commitment to the entire United Nations family, to bring solutions, but also to adopt effective tools with the Government of Cape Verde and local communities in the fight against climate change,” he stated.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, he highlighted the opportunities existing in the archipelago, especially in the areas of tourism and the environment, advocating the need to maximize the country’s potential for economic and social development.<\/p>\n

“But there is also a positive element that we must consider: the opportunities we have seen in the Cape Verde islands, both from a tourism and environmental perspective,” he noted.<\/p>\n

He explained that the goal is to transform Cape Verdean cities into centers of innovation and opportunity, especially for young people, ensuring a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n

Sylla recalled the long tradition of collaboration between UN-Habitat and Cape Verde, while emphasizing the importance of adapting urbanization strategies to current challenges.<\/p>\n

“As you know, the world has evolved, and we have seen a very strong urban growth in Cape Verde, as well as the effects of climate change,” he added.<\/p>\n

He also referred to the effects of recent climate change, particularly Storm Erin, which hit the country on August 11th, expressing condolences to the affected families.<\/p>\n

In this sense, he advocated the need to rethink urban planning, ensuring that all interventions comply with standards of protection and anticipation of climate change phenomena.<\/p>\n

The meeting also discussed strengthening the partnership framework, including initiatives previously supported by the European Union and projects linked to housing policies, territorial planning, and the promotion of urban resilience, both at national and local levels.<\/p>\n
