Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Jose\u0301 Maria Neves, reiterated that Cape Verde has recognized the State of Palestine since 1988 and that it firmly maintains its position of respect for international law, the United Nations Charter, and the resolutions issued by the organization.<\/p>\n

In statements to the press during a consultation held in recent days with political parties, religious institutions, civil society organizations, and former high-ranking government officials regarding the political situation,<\/p>\n

The Head of State emphasized that, for a small island state, with Cape Verde’s vulnerability and sensitivity, the path forward involves strengthening multilateralism.<\/p>\n

“Cabo Verde always defends multilateralism, respect for the United Nations Charter, respect for the sovereignty of States, and respect for territorial integrity at the United Nations,” he stated.<\/p>\n

According to Jose\u0301 Maria Neves, strengthening this commitment represents a guarantee for small countries.<\/p>\n

“For a small island state like Cape Verde, it must work to strengthen multilateralism, which is clearly in crisis, and respect for international law, especially respect for the United Nations Charter and United Nations resolutions. This is a guarantee for small states like Cape Verde,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n

The President recalled that Cape Verde is among the countries that officially recognized the State of Palestine several decades ago.<\/p>\n

“Regarding Cape Verde’s position, it recognized the State of Palestine in 1988. And, therefore, we stand with the countries that have already recognized the State of Palestine, and we want to work to dispel extremism, promote dialogue, and do everything possible to ensure negotiations and a negotiated solution to conflicts, so that there can be peace, respect for the rights and freedoms of the Palestinian people, and thus development,” he declared.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Jose\u0301 Maria Neves emphasized that the existence of two states that coexist peacefully constitutes the path to a definitive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/p>\n

“It’s also respect for all the decisions the United Nations has made since the 1940s. The existence of two states that must work together, pushing extremism away from all sides,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Head of State also clarified that there is no conflict regarding Cape Verde’s representation at the United Nations General Assemblies. He explained that the country has a practice of alternating between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

“There has been a decision, long ago, that at the United Nations General Assembly, the country will be represented alternately by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. Therefore, one year the President of the Republic goes, and the following year the Prime Minister goes. I was at the General Assembly, at the Future Summit, last year, and this year it was the Prime Minister. Therefore, there is no crisis, no problem, no conflict regarding this matter,” he assured.<\/p>\n

Jose\u0301 Maria Neves added that this coordination is the result of ongoing consultation between the sovereign bodies.<\/p>\n

“There is always a compromise between the Government and the President of the Republic, particularly in the area of \u200b\u200bforeign relations,” he stated.<\/p>\n

For Jose\u0301 Maria Neves, the defense of peace, dialogue, and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms must remain at the center of Cape Verdean diplomatic action.<\/p>\n

The Head of State also emphasized that Cape Verde will remain committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, integrating this effort into a foreign policy based on multilateralism and international law.<\/p>\n
