Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Movement for Democracy (MpD – ruling party) believes it would be in a position to win the elections if they were held now, despite acknowledging and committing to resolving the “hot issues” that persisted during its term.<\/p>\n

This assessment was made by the party’s Secretary-General, Agostinho Lopes, to Inforpress, while reviewing the meeting of the National Political Commission, parliamentary group, and Government, held on Saturday, the 8th, to analyze the political situation and discuss strategies for the 2026 legislative elections.<\/p>\n

“We also addressed the hot issues that were not very well resolved and decided to reinforce action in these specific sectors, which are already known to you,” he emphasized, pointing to solutions to strengthen actions in areas such as transport, energy, and water.<\/p>\n

Agostinho Lopes justified the delays in implementing the Government’s program in these areas with external factors, namely Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges, the MpD summit meeting assessed that the government program is being fulfilled with a \u201chigh degree of satisfaction\u201d and decided to maintain the level of investment.<\/p>\n

Internally, the party meeting served to define the reinforcement of improvements in the functioning of the parliamentary group, aiming for greater cohesion and consistency in the political struggle.<\/p>\n

To this end, Agostinho Lopes stated that the decisions made point to the need for the party to improve its communication, to prepare for the campaign, and to have not only a campaign leadership team, but also a discourse, a posture, and a preparation plan for future campaigns.<\/p>\n

According to him, the Political Commission was tasked with materializing the organization of the next campaigns, promising to have a concrete and approved proposal on campaign management, slates, political-electoral marketing, and image by December 15th.<\/p>\n

When questioned about the economic situation, Agostinho Lopes argued that the current moment represents the \u201cbest Cape Verde of all time,\u201d stating that \u201cCape Verdeans have never lived as well as they do now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The politician highlighted the \u201cstrong support\u201d the country has internationally, namely, \u201csupport from most development partners,\u201d \u201cfull endorsement\u201d from financial institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF, and support from the European Union and strategic partners, including effective support from African institutions such as the African Development Bank, ECOWAS, and the African Union.<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General confirmed that the MpD candidate for the next elections is the current party president, Ulisses Correia e Silva, whose term as leader ends on July 14, 2026.<\/p>\n
