Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The third ordinary session of the Municipal Assembly (AM) of Boa Vista, decentralized in the North Zone, was dominated by debates on the water crisis, sanitation, and the degradation of infrastructure, with residents and elected officials demanding solutions.<\/p>\n

The lack of water in some areas of the island was denounced by residents, who demanded an urgent resolution to the problem.<\/p>\n

The mayor of Boa Vista himself, Cla\u0301udio Mendonc\u0327a, described as “unacceptable” the fact that about 30% of the island’s population has problems accessing water, revealing that the city hall spends R$ 75,000 annually on water transportation.<\/p>\n

Regarding sanitation, the bad smell in the city of Sal Rei was attributed by the president to a sewage leak in the Clotilde region, and not to the wastewater treatment plant (ETE), acknowledging the need for a sewage network project and the implementation of underground drainage to combat the recurring floods in the capital, denounced by the population.<\/p>\n

The debate focused on the need for the city hall to invest in definitive solutions.<\/p>\n

Elected representative Bernardina Gomes, from PAICV, described sanitation as the island’s “Achilles’ heel,” demanding a strong partnership between the central government and the local authority.<\/p>\n

The municipality’s strategy of resorting to external financing for growth was questioned, although President Mendonc\u0327a defended it. This approach by the municipality was also criticized by residents who demanded transparency and detailed information about the specific projects to be implemented.<\/p>\n

Solid waste management and lack of maintenance were also criticized. Elected representative Tomilson Neves, from MpD, highlighted the fact that the Center for Art and Culture (CAC) is inactive due to lack of preventive maintenance, and the degradation of the changing rooms at the Arse\u0301nio Ramos Stadium, despite the new turf.<\/p>\n
