Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verde and Senegal are strengthening strategic economic cooperation, focusing on direct imports at the source and facilitating maritime transport, aiming to reduce the costs of essential products such as food and cement.<\/p>\n

The initiative was discussed this Wednesday in Praia, during a visit by a Senegalese business delegation to the Sotavento Chamber of Commerce (CCS).<\/p>\n

The president of the institution, Marcos Rodrigues, framed the meeting as a significant change in import policy, advocating for leveraging Senegal’s geographical proximity and productive capacity instead of more distant intermediary markets.<\/p>\n

He explained that this rapprochement also results from previous contacts, including a Cape Verdean business mission to Senegal, and aims to intensify relations, mainly in the food sector, taking into account constraints in national supply during certain periods.<\/p>\n

Marcos Rodrigues indicated that this strategy is already showing practical results, citing as an example the 25 percent (%) reduction in the cost of cement in the Cape Verdean market after the start of imports from Senegal. The official emphasized that the goal is to intensify relations, especially in the food sector, to mitigate constraints in national supply.<\/p>\n

Facilitating maritime transport emerges as one of the main priorities, since the absence of regular, efficient, and affordable connections continues to limit trade flow between the two countries, despite the short distance separating them.<\/p>\n

In this context, the presence of maritime sector operators in the delegation is understood as a step towards promoting concrete solutions that will improve the connection between Dakar and Praia.<\/p>\n

The president of the Sotavento Chamber of Commerce also said that businesspeople have been taking a more active role in boosting these relations, seeking to create conditions for the development of partnerships, while also advocating for a facilitating role from public authorities, especially in terms of ports and customs.<\/p>\n

From the Senegalese side, the Director-General of the Senegalese Shippers Council (COSEC), Ndeye Thiam, emphasized that the mission aligns with the guidelines of the Senegalese authorities and aims to strengthen a relationship that is still relatively unexplored between the two countries, despite their geographical proximity.<\/p>\n

The Senegalese official highlighted the complementarity between the two economies, noting that Senegal has significant production of goods that Cape Verde needs to import.<\/p>\n

Regarding the Dakar-Praia maritime corridor, she indicated that the connection exists, but its regularity now depends on better coordination between operators and an increase in cargo volume.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a waste to depend on distant markets when only 500 kilometers separate us,\u201d stated Ndeye Thiam.<\/p>\n

The business mission continues with meetings between businesspeople and institutional visits, with the objective of identifying logistical constraints and creating conditions for more dynamic and structured economic cooperation between the two countries in the sub-region.<\/p>\n
