Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Uni-CV researcher Celeste Fortes highlighted the need to prepare future healthcare professionals while they are still in academia to identify and deal with cases of female genital mutilation and to advocate for its prevention.<\/p>\n

The researcher from the Center for Gender and Family Research (CIGEF) at the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) was speaking to the press about a free course on female genital mutilation, aimed primarily at nursing students.<\/p>\n

She explained that the initiative aims to equip future professionals with the tools to recognize this practice and act to combat it, through an informed and educational approach.<\/p>\n

According to the same source, academic training plays “a central role” in prevention, allowing students to understand the risks associated with female genital mutilation, which are felt from childhood to adulthood, including serious complications during pregnancy and childbirth.<\/p>\n

\u201cA girl who is subjected to mutilation at a very young age ends up suffering devastating impacts, both as a child and later in adolescence and adulthood. We know of international data on the deaths of pregnant women who have undergone female genital mutilation,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

According to Celeste Fortes, although it is not a traditional practice in Cape Verde, there are already records in the country, associated with the mobility of people from contexts where female genital mutilation is culturally accepted.<\/p>\n

In this sense, she considered that health professionals should be prepared to identify signs and act appropriately.<\/p>\n

Regarding the recent conviction of a group of immigrants for practicing sexual mutilation on the island of Sal, she considered it a just decision, emphasizing the importance of a firm response from the authorities, combined with a pedagogical approach within the communities.<\/p>\n

In turn, So\u0301nia Conde\u0301, a Guinean national and survivor of female genital mutilation, shared her experience, describing it as \u201ctraumatic\u201d and with lasting effects on her life.<\/p>\n

Currently, the activist collaborates with CIGEF on awareness-raising actions aimed primarily at immigrant communities in West Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw an opportunity to help with awareness-raising issues, especially for the immigrant community and my compatriots, to not subject their daughters to this practice. Often, families don’t have much choice because the practice is so culturally ingrained, either because they inherited it or because they believe they are doing good for their daughters,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

According to the activist, cultural pressure and the belief that they are acting in their daughters’ best interests make combating this more complex and require a careful approach based on dialogue and education.<\/p>\n

In this sense, she indicated that information and training are essential to deconstruct beliefs and promote behavioral change, emphasizing that \u201cnothing justifies female genital mutilation,\u201d except in \u201cstrictly medical situations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The training aimed at nursing students is part of CIGEF’s mission to promote human rights, gender equality, and the prevention of violence in its various forms.<\/p>\n

The training programs are conducted in partnership with the High Authority for Migration (HAI), the Marigual Network, and with technical and financial support from the United Nations Population Fund.<\/p>\n
