Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The director of the Biodiversity Project, Albert Taxoneira, denounced the existence of invasive constructions and earthmoving works in the Costa de Fragata Natural Reserve, on Sal Island, warning of the risk of degradation of a protected ecosystem.<\/p>\n

In a press interview on the 17th, Albert Taxoneira explained that the alert was given last Wednesday, when a team from the non-governmental organization (NGO) detected heavy machinery operating in the dune area of \u200b\u200bthe reserve.<\/p>\n

“They entered with a bulldozer and leveled all those dunes. They also placed a container; we imagined it was a construction site inside the reserve,” reported the official, adding that the authorities, namely the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Municipal Police, were immediately contacted.<\/p>\n

According to Albert Taxoneira, the representatives of the construction company present at the site presented documentation that supposedly proves authorization from the Sal City Hall for the work. However, the environmentalist disputes the legality of the act.<\/p>\n

“The city hall cannot authorize construction in a nature reserve. Nobody can build there,” he said.<\/p>\n

The same source emphasized that, although the construction has been blocked since Thursday morning, the 16th, by order of the National Secretariat for the Environment, it is now necessary to ensure the removal of the equipment and the recovery of the ecosystem.<\/p>\n

The director of the Biodiversity Project lamented the destruction of habitats that “take many years to form and are destroyed in a few hours,” accusing the local city hall of having, in the past, requested the declassification of that area for the purpose of selling land.<\/p>\n

“Protected areas are for all of us, for all the people, not just for biodiversity. They offer ecosystem services and protect local communities,” he argued, asking for a clear distinction between “private interest and the common good.”<\/p>\n

Albert Taxoneira also recalled that the pressure on nature reserves in Sal has been recurrent, citing as an example the resizing of Ponta Sino\u0301 to accommodate hotel developments in the tourist area of \u200b\u200bSanta Maria.<\/p>\n

The environmentalist is now urging the relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Attorney General’s Office, to act “firmly” to curb this type of violation in environmental protection areas.<\/p>\n
