Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Central Prison of Praia currently integrates 120 inmates in vocational training programs within the framework of the Prisoner Labor Employability Project, financed by Portuguese cooperation, the Minister of Justice said this Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The project includes the implementation of production units in the areas of bakery and confectionery, leatherwork, cutting and sewing, as well as agricultural activities, including traditional agriculture and aeroponics techniques, in addition to livestock farming.<\/p>\n

During a visit to the new facilities, the Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, stressed that the initiative’s central objective is “to prepare prisoners for serving their sentences, equipping them with technical skills that allow them to enter the job market or create their own business.”<\/p>\n

According to the governor, the production developed within the prison has a dual purpose, one of which is to contribute to improving the prisoners’ food conditions through self-sufficiency in products such as bread and vegetables, and to generate surpluses destined for sale in the local market.<\/p>\n

The same source indicated that products made in the workshops and agricultural units of the prison have already been presented at fairs and markets in Praia, where they have registered notable demand, especially in the areas of leather art and agricultural production.<\/p>\n

The project also includes psychosocial support and continuing education, in a logic that articulates professional training with preparation for community reintegration.<\/p>\n

In turn, the Portuguese ambassador to Cape Verde, Joa\u0303o Queiroz, considered that the initiative represents “a structuring partnership between the two States,” emphasizing that the focus is to ensure that, upon serving their sentence, prisoners have concrete conditions to reintegrate into society.<\/p>\n

Within the scope of the cooperation, the provision of support kits to some trainees is also planned, with a view to the continuity of activities initiated in prison after their release.<\/p>\n

The Employability Project at the Praia Central Prison falls within the policy of social reintegration in prisons, focusing on professional training as an instrument for reducing recidivism and promoting socioeconomic inclusion.<\/p>\n

It is worth remembering that the prisoners selected for the training are previously subjected to a rigorous selection process, with the essential requirement being that they have already served at least two-thirds of their sentence.<\/p>\n
