The Minister of Health stated today that Cabo Verde &#8220;recorded no cases of autochthonous malaria&#8221; during the first quarter, emphasizing that the country must maintain constant vigilance to preserve its status as a nation free of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge Figueiredo was speaking as part of the commemorations for World Malaria Day and highlighted that &#8220;the result is encouraging,&#8221; but warned that there is no room for complacency, given the risks associated with international mobility, climate change, and environmental vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister made these remarks at the opening of a roundtable discussion on the theme &#8220;Vulnerabilities and Challenges in Malaria Eradication\u2014Keeping Cabo Verde Free: A Commitment for All,&#8221; held within the framework of the World Malaria Day celebrations, observed on April 25.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jorge Figueiredo, achieving malaria-free status\u2014attained in 2024 with recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO)\u2014represents not only a victory but also an added responsibility for the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We earned this status, and we earned the duty to maintain it,&#8221; he affirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister argued that the fight against malaria must be embraced as a multisectoral responsibility, involving not only the Ministry of Health but also sectors such as the environment, education, transport, tourism, municipalities, and local communities.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, he underscored the importance of controlling mosquito breeding sites, epidemiological surveillance, monitoring at ports and airports, and coordinated action between public institutions and international partners.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge Figueiredo also highlighted the role of the National Institute of Public Health in surveillance and rapid response, as well as the contributions of the WHO and national experts in consolidating the gains achieved.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister reiterated that keeping Cabo Verde free of malaria requires continuous effort. The initiative is part of this year\u2019s global theme, \u201cDriven to End Malaria: Now We Can.
