Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Fernando El\u00edsio Freire, announced this Monday, 11th, that the Government wants to make it mandatory for self-employed professionals in Cabo Verde to register for social security, in order to guarantee assistance and avoid poverty.<\/p>\n

Fernando El\u00edsio Freire provided this information at the end of a meeting with the Parliament’s Specialized Committee on Education, Culture, Health, Youth, Sports and Social Issues, where he presented the Mais Program.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are finding a solution for people, those who are carpenters, farmers, cultural agents, who promote events, who have some income and then because they are not registered in the social security system, at the first difficulty they fall into poverty, what we are calling for at the moment is a strong mobilization for the enrollment of everyone in the social security system, because it guarantees medical assistance, guarantees health and guarantees pensions and assistance in the most difficult times\u201d, explained the Minister of the Family, quoted by Inforpress.<\/p>\n

According to him, this measure serves as an incentive for people to register, in order to \u201cprotect\u201d the country and ensure that there are fewer poor people in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, 50% of the people working in Cape Verde are not registered in the social security system\u201d, he warned.<\/p>\n

In this context, he says that, then, \u201cwe have to create mechanisms so that they can register\u201d and one of the ways we will find is legislation, which \u201cmust be adapted and connected with our economic and social reality\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

Fernando El\u00edsio Freire stated that the obligation comes from the same fact that companies that, in order to have access to public tenders \u201chave to be up to date with social security\u201d, also the liberal professional, to have access to financing, the bank account and \u201cvarious instruments\u201d must be registered in the social security system.<\/p>\n

The official exemplified that more than 70% of the elderly people in Cape Verde who are poor worked and had income during their working age, as they did not contribute to the social security system, when they were no longer of working age or when they could no longer physically work, plunged into poverty because they lost income quickly.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Family, Inclusion and Social Development ended up stating that if these elderly people had been enrolled in the social security systems, they would have been entitled to a pension and various forms of assistance, but as they did not, they \u201cfell into poverty\u201d, adding that the same has to be done for the future of the country, the young people and people who are close to the \u201cage of inactivity\u201d.<\/p>\n
