Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic defended today that \u201cmore should be invested in the appreciation of teachers and meet their demands, as far as possible\u201d, as they still \u201cdeal with various challenges and constraints\u201d that affect \u201ctheir good performance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Through a message published on the Presidency of the Republic’s Facebook page, Jos\u00e9 Maria Neves congratulated all Cape Verdean teachers for their \u201cselfless and meritorious work of training several generations of Cape Verdeans\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the President of the Republic, in Cape Verde, education has always been a \u201cspringboard for social ascension, to overcome poverty, escape social marginalization and economic dependence and this will continue in the future\u201d.<\/p>\n

Therefore, he also defended that it is necessary to rescue the prestige of the teacher, as it was in the past, when the profession was synonymous with moral and ethical authority, and exercised as a mission and vocation, not being seen as a job\u201d.<\/p>\n

The head of state recalled that the covid-19 pandemic changed the world and that few professions have suffered as much impact as that of a teacher, with classes suspended, school recesses empty and socialization interrupted.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeachers had to reinvent themselves and overcome themselves to face a completely new reality, having, for example, to teach classes at a distance, facing various difficulties. Fortunately, normality has gradually returned, with the reduction of cases of covid-19, leaving many lessons from this experience that should serve as a guide for future decisions\u201d, he praised.<\/p>\n

However, he added, current teachers, like other professions, will need constant updating, to continue learning, with an open mind to new methods and innovations. This is because, he explained, today’s student has access to a huge amount of information and needs to be better guided.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Maria Neves also defended that they should \u201cawaken and maintain in students the magic inherent in learning\u201d and always keep in mind Nelson Mandela’s maxim that \u201ceducation is the most powerful weapon to change the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

Teacher’s day was instituted by decree number 25 of April 21, 1990, in memory of Baltazar Lopes da Silva, writer, poet, linguist, lawyer, teacher for several generations.<\/p>\n

Baltazar was born in Caleij\u00e3o, S\u00e3o Nicolau, on April 23, 1907, the day on which World Book Day is celebrated.<\/p>\n
