Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Fraudsters are targeting young professionals using their LinkedIn profiles, police are warning.<\/p>\n

One scam known as \u201cbogus boss\u201d involves workers receiving fake emails purporting to be from their employer.<\/p>\n

The website is being \u201cmassively exploited by criminals in terms of being able to scrape information,\u201d said Warwickshire Police.<\/p>\n

Cyber protect officer James Squire said it was one of the fastest growing scams the force was seeing.<\/p>\n

One victim, in his 20s, told BBC CWR he lost almost \u00a31,000 after responding to fake emails and texts from someone he believed to be his boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d started a new job so I was really keen to impress,\u201d he said, when he received the message asking him to purchase vouchers on behalf of the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really small company and it wasn\u2019t out of the ordinary for him to be in touch with me,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first they asked me to purchase \u00a3300 of vouchers and then once I\u2019d agreed they asked me to buy more and more of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI showed a couple of my colleagues, and they seemed to think it was normal so I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained it wasn\u2019t until after the purchase had gone through he realised the email address was fake.<\/p>\n

He said he was unable to get a refund from his bank\u2019s fraud department \u201cbecause they were considered purchases that I had made\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy colleagues and I go through online safety training, but I still don\u2019t know how these people got hold of my work email address and phone number,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The \u201cincredibly convincing\u201d scam is one of the most common tactics criminals are using at the moment, said PCSO Squire.<\/p>\n

The website is \u201cgreat for business,\u201d he added but allowed the criminals access to information that make the fake emails seem \u201cmore plausible and believable\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately for us everybody has got an email address and phone number in order to do pretty much anything at the moment so unfortunately criminals are able to exploit that from anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n

The criminals are relying on us to be click-happy, be that a link in an email or text message, so take five seconds or five minutes to think what you\u2019re clicking on,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
