According to a press release, Gabriela Carrascal\u00e3o brings to this exhibition a set of works using oil on canvas, Chinese ink and colored pencils, which portray the experiences of women in her native Timor-Leste .<\/p>\n

In this exhibition, the artist \u201cexpresses in brushstrokes of vibrant unique tones, born in a palette that she creates herself, as an alchemist of colors, with the ability to add to her own rainbow colors that she imagines, mixes and applies on her canvases, from which they emerge. figures and tones that surprise the eyes of those who absorb the history of Timor-Leste through them\u201d, according to the synopsis.<\/p>\n

Maria Gabriela Guterres Viegas Carrascal\u00e3o was born at Fazenda Algarve, in East Timor, in 1949. She is the daughter of a Portuguese father and an East Timorese mother.<\/p>\n

In the turbulent years of struggle for Timor-Leste’s independence, she was forced to seek political refuge in Australia, where she graduated in Journalism from the University of Wollongong, in New South Wales, having worked on Australian Public Radio and Television, SBS. In the scope of her journalistic work, she was, in 2007, the first foreign journalist to be distinguished with the American \u201cKnight Fellowship\u201d award, which recognized her civic work in favor of her people and the democratic consolidation of Timor-Leste.<\/p>\n
