Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Workers at the Royal Horizon hotel, in Boa Vista, demonstrated today on that island to claim their labor rights. After the pandemic, the hotel has not yet reopened its doors, so the workers appeal to the management to decide their future. Or that they reopen the doors, or that they terminate the contracts, with indemnities and restore the social security.<\/p>\n

Osvaldo Lima, representative of the Union of Industry, Commerce and Tourism (Sicotur) in Boa Vista, explained to Inforpress that this group of workers decided to organize the demonstration to try to demonstrate their discontent with the situation that has been dragging on since April 2019, the beginning of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Since then, workers have been at home in the lay off process, initially, with 70%, and since the beginning of this year, with 50% of the salary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are an average of more than a hundred workers waiting for the hotel to reopen. Until then, there is no feedback from the hotel management\u201d, guaranteed this unionist.<\/p>\n

Lima argues that, like other hotel developments, this one could have already reopened or gradually integrated its employees.<\/p>\n

Supposed to open in June<\/p>\n

This source also adds that there was an attempt to negotiate between the hotel’s management and a workers’ committee created for this purpose, but that they did not reach an agreement.<\/p>\n

The management initially informed that the 50% of the salary would be in force until June and that, after that date, they would open the hotel, which did not happen and we are already in August.<\/p>\n

Therefore, they decided to go for this form of struggle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are unhappy with the contempt that we are suffering from the hotel management due to the 50% of the salary, and taking into account the socio-economic context, it is not even enough for basic expenses\u201d, said Inusa Barry, a maintenance technician who works at the hotel for three years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can no longer afford the salary we currently receive,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

No INPS coverage<\/p>\n

According to her, they have been without social security coverage since December.<\/p>\n

This demonstration is, therefore, an attempt to ask \u201cmainly the State\u201d to see what they can do for the workers of this hotel.<\/p>\n

This is because, as they say, life is difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf before, living with 70% of the salary was difficult, even worse with 50%\u201d, concluded the Sicotur representative in Boa Vista.<\/p>\n

Osvaldo Lima said that, before making another decision in this fight for the labor rights of workers at the Royal Horizon hotel, however, they intend to wait for feedback from the hotel’s management.<\/p>\n
