Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Ostinato Records is launching a new acoustic and artist-lead series this February, beginning with an album by The Ano Nobo Quartet.
\nAs Ostinato shares: \u201cIn the 1970s, Pascoal, a soldier in Cape Verde\u2019s independence struggle nicknamed \u201cEl Bruto\u201d or \u201cThe Brute\u201d for his \u201cbrutal\u201d guitar skills, was whisked around the world during the Cold War, finding himself stationed from Cuba to Crimea.
\nA musician at heart, Pascoal\u2019s military postings became jam sessions as he mingled with soldiers from across Africa, Asia, and South America.
\nToday, in the small inland town of S\u00e3o Domingos on Cape Verde\u2019s Santiago Island, he leads The Ano Nobo Quartet, named after his mentor and legendary Cape Verdean composer, Ano Nobo.\u201d Led by Pascoal, The Ano Nobo Quartet also features Fany, Nono, and Afrikanu.\u201d
\nThe Strings of S\u00e3o Domingos was recorded during early 2021 across homes, sea sides, and the volcanic hills of Cabo Verde using mobile recording equipment.<\/p>\n

Across the album, the group combines koladera guitars with elements of flamenco, Samba Can\u00e7\u00e3o, and Marrabenta.<\/p>\n

While Ostinato has largely focused on reissues, The Strings of S\u00e3o Domingos marks the debut record in a new acoustic and artist-led series of new releases.<\/p>\n

It follows the label\u2019s reissue of 4 Mars\u2019 Super Somali Sounds LP \u2014 one of our favourite records from 2021.<\/p>\n
