L\u2019\u00e9tude des images fournies par Hubble a permis de distinguer une activit\u00e9 volcanique sur cette plan\u00e8te baptis\u00e9e GJ 1132 b et situ\u00e9e \u00e0 41 ann\u00e9es lumi\u00e8res du syst\u00e8me solaire. C\u2019est la premi\u00e8re fois qu\u2019une atmosph\u00e8re secondaire est d\u00e9tect\u00e9e sur une plan\u00e8te hors du syst\u00e8me solaire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNous avons d\u2019abord pens\u00e9 que ces plan\u00e8tes fortement irradi\u00e9es \u00e9taient assez \u2018ennuyeuses\u2019, car nous pensions qu\u2019elles avaient perdu leur atmosph\u00e8re\u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Raissa Estrella, co-auteur de l\u2019\u00e9tude au Jet Propulsion Laboratory de la NASA \u00e0 Pasadena (Californie), dans une note scientifique publi\u00e9e par la NASA et l\u2019ESA, l\u2019Agence spatiale europ\u00e9enne. \u201cC\u2019est passionnant, car nous pensons que l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re que nous voyons aujourd\u2019hui a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La combinaison d\u2019observations directes et de mod\u00e9lisations informatiques ont permis d\u2019\u00e9tablir que cette atmosph\u00e8re secondaire \u00e9tait constitu\u00e9e d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne, de cyanure d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne, de m\u00e9thane, d\u2019ammoniac et d\u2019une brume d\u2019hydrocarbures, alors que l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re primaire de GJ 1132 b aurait plut\u00f4t \u00e9t\u00e9 constitu\u00e9e d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne et d\u2019h\u00e9lium. Les \u00e9tudes des astronomes sugg\u00e8rent que l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne initial pourrait avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 \u201cabsorb\u00e9\u201d par le manteau de magma en fusion de l\u2019exoplan\u00e8te. Il serait \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent lib\u00e9r\u00e9 par ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne volcanique, formant cette nouvelle atmosph\u00e8re. L\u2019\u00e9quipe scientifique fait l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se que la cro\u00fbte terrestre de GJ 1132 b est tr\u00e8s fine et qu\u2019elle serait trop fragile pour supporter un quelconque relief ressemblant \u00e0 des montagnes volcaniques. Le terrain plat pourrait \u00eatre fissur\u00e9, \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019une coquille d\u2019\u0153uf, ce qui pourrait expliquer la lib\u00e9ration de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne et autres gaz.<\/p>\n<p>Cette d\u00e9couverte est importante, car elle donne aux scientifiques travaillant sur les exoplan\u00e8tes un moyen de mieux comprendre la g\u00e9ologie d\u2019une plan\u00e8te \u00e0 partir de son atmosph\u00e8re\u201d, explique Paul Rimmer, de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Cambridge (Royaume-Uni) dans le communiqu\u00e9. \u201cCette atmosph\u00e8re secondaire provient de la surface et de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de la plan\u00e8te, et c\u2019est donc une fen\u00eatre qui s\u2019ouvre sur la g\u00e9ologie d\u2019un autre monde\u201d, poursuit Paul Rimmer. \u201cIl reste encore beaucoup de travail \u00e0 faire pour regarder \u00e0 travers, mais la d\u00e9couverte de cette fen\u00eatre est d\u2019une grande importance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque les astronomes utiliseront le futur t\u00e9lescope spatial James Webb pour \u00e9tudier GJ 1132 b, il est possible qu\u2019ils puissent observer \u201cnon pas le spectre de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, mais plut\u00f4t le spectre de la surface\u201d et donc une activit\u00e9 g\u00e9ologique r\u00e9elle, avance Mark Swain, chef d\u2019\u00e9quipe au Jet Propulsion Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>GJ1132 b et la Terre partagent quelques points communs : toutes deux pr\u00e9sentent une densit\u00e9, une taille et un \u00e2ge similaires et disposeraient d\u2019une atmosph\u00e8re compos\u00e9e en grande partie d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne au d\u00e9but et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 chauff\u00e9es avant de refroidir.
