Mais cette observation e\u0301tait indirecte.<\/p>\n<p>Le te\u0301lescope avait utilise\u0301 la me\u0301thode des transits, en captant l&rsquo;infime variation de luminosite\u0301 provoque\u0301e par le passage de la plane\u0300te devant son e\u0301toile et en analysant la lumie\u0300re \u00ab\u00a0filtre\u0301e\u00a0\u00bb a\u0300 travers son atmosphe\u0300re. Les diffe\u0301rentes mole\u0301cules pre\u0301sentes dans l&rsquo;atmosphe\u0300re laissent des signatures spe\u0301cifiques, qui permettent d&rsquo;en de\u0301terminer la composition.<\/p>\n<p>Cette fois, une e\u0301quipe de chercheurs ame\u0301ricains a utilise\u0301 les coronographes du JWST: des instruments qui permettent d&rsquo;occulter la lumie\u0300re intense d&rsquo;une e\u0301toile afin de mieux observer son environnement. A savoir les quatre ge\u0301antes gazeuses du syste\u0300me HR 8799 situe\u0301 a\u0300 130 anne\u0301es-lumie\u0300re de la Terre.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est comme mettre votre pouce devant le Soleil pour mieux observer le ciel\u00a0\u00bb, explique a\u0300 l&rsquo;AFP William Balmer, astrophysicien a\u0300 l&rsquo;Universite\u0301 Johns Hopkins et auteur principal de l&rsquo;e\u0301tude publie\u0301e lundi dans The Astrophysical Journal.<\/p>\n<p>De cette fac\u0327on, \u00ab\u00a0nous avons observe\u0301 directement la lumie\u0300re e\u0301mise par la plane\u0300te elle-me\u0302me\u00a0\u00bb et non l&#8217;empreinte de l&rsquo;atmosphe\u0300re sur la lumie\u0300re provenant de l&rsquo;e\u0301toile-ho\u0302te, ajoute-t-il.<\/p>\n<p>Un proce\u0301de\u0301 de\u0301licat &#8211; comme utiliser une lampe torche pour repe\u0301rer des lucioles a\u0300 co\u0302te\u0301 d&rsquo;un phare, selon le chercheur.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ele\u0301ment de preuve &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Bien que les ge\u0301antes gazeuses de HR 8799 ne puissent pas abriter la vie, il est possible qu&rsquo;elles aient des lunes qui le pourraient, estime M. Balmer. Dans notre syste\u0300me solaire, plusieurs missions sont en cours a\u0300 la recherche d&rsquo;indices de vie sur les lunes glace\u0301es de Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p>Le CO2, qui se condense sous forme de petites particules de glace dans le froid profond de l&rsquo;espace, peut e\u0301galement nous en apprendre plus sur la formation des plane\u0300tes.<\/p>\n<p>Dans notre syste\u0300me solaire, on pense que Jupiter et Saturne se sont forme\u0301es par un processus au cours duquel de petites particules glace\u0301es se sont assemble\u0301es en un noyau solide qui a ensuite aspire\u0301 du gaz pour former des plane\u0300tes ge\u0301antes.<\/p>\n<p>La pre\u0301sence de CO2 dans HR 8799 &#8211; un jeune syste\u0300me de 30 millions d&rsquo;anne\u0301es seulement contre 4,6 milliards pour le no\u0302tre &#8211; est un \u00ab\u00a0e\u0301le\u0301ment de preuve essentiel\u00a0\u00bb que les plane\u0300tes en dehors de notre syste\u0300me solaire peuvent se former de manie\u0300re similaire, souligne M. Balmer.<\/p>\n<p>Si quelque 6.000 exoplane\u0300tes ont e\u0301te\u0301 de\u0301couvertes a\u0300 ce jour, la plupart sont des ge\u0301antes gazeuses a\u0300 l&rsquo;image de celles de HR 8799.<\/p>\n<p>Mais pour de\u0301couvrir des exoplane\u0300tes susceptibles d&rsquo;abriter la vie, \u00ab\u00a0le grand bond en avant\u00a0\u00bb que doivent faire les scientifiques est de se concentrer sur des plane\u0300tes rocheuses comparables a\u0300 la Terre. Des mondes plus petits, moins lumineux et donc plus difficiles a\u0300 observer, note le scientifique.<\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;est ce que pre\u0301voit de faire le futur te\u0301lescope spatial Nancy Grace Roman de la Nasa, qui utilisera un coronographe pour y parvenir apre\u0300s son lancement pre\u0301vu en 2027.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;e\u0301quipe de M. Balmer compte, elle, utiliser le JWST pour observer davantage de syste\u0300mes a\u0300 quatre plane\u0300tes.
