Po\u00e9tique, le titre du nouveau livre de Waberi est une question pos\u00e9e par la petite B\u00e9a du haut de ses six ans\u2009: \u00ab Pourquoi tu danses quand tu marches\u2009? \u00bb Constatant la d\u00e9marche chaotique de son paternel, elle le regarde comme un artiste \u00e9voluant en rythme alors que la d\u00e9marche des autres, toujours identique, est format\u00e9e. \u00ab Les enfants de mon quartier, eux, m\u2019appellent le Gringalet ou l\u2019Avorton. [\u2026] Ce pass\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 ma prison. Je veux d\u00e9sormais [\u2026] m\u2019en lib\u00e9rer \u00bb, lui r\u00e9pond Aden Robleh, entra\u00eenant sa fille dans les labyrinthes de sa m\u00e9moire.<\/p>\n

Direction le quartier du Ch\u00e2teau-d\u2019Eau, \u00e0 Djibouti, dans les ann\u00e9es 1970, entre sa m\u00e8re \u00e0 lui, la redout\u00e9e Zahra, son p\u00e8re, \u00ab Amine La Tige \u00bb relativement absent, une institutrice admir\u00e9e \u00ab Madame Annick la Fran\u00e7aise de France \u00bb, Ladane, la servante aim\u00e9e, et les camarades de classe redout\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Enfant malingre et taiseux, \u00ab boule de douleurs, de larmes et de pleurs \u00bb, Aden n\u2019a pas d\u2019amis. Sa solitude s\u2019intensifie apr\u00e8s l\u2019accident qui enterrera pour de bon ses r\u00eaves de devenir footballeur, cow-boy ou marin.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est sur les traces de ces traumatismes que le narrateur d\u00e9ambule, se rem\u00e9morant le quotidien du quartier et les histoires de \u00ab Grand-m\u00e8re Cochise \u00bb, m\u00e9moire vivante des bergers nomades de la famille. En toile de fond\u2009: la colonisation et ses cons\u00e9quences vues par les yeux de l\u2019enfant et enrichies des connaissances de l\u2019adulte.<\/p>\n

Ce douzi\u00e8me roman de Waberi, avec en couverture un portrait de lui avec sa fille, est le plus autobiographique de tous. \u00ab Toutes les \u00e9motions sont vraies \u00bb, pr\u00e9cise-t-il. Et elles nous transportent dans un cheminement int\u00e9rieur pudique\u2009: celui de la r\u00e9conciliation d\u2019un homme avec son enfance. Sous les yeux de B\u00e9a, vers qui la parole se tourne sans cesse. Comme la grand-m\u00e8re dont le narrateur dit qu\u2019\u00ab elle venait d\u2019un autre monde et d\u2019une autre \u00e9poque \u00bb, lui-m\u00eame semble \u00e9prouver cette distance avec sa fille.<\/p>\n

Parfois, ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 de narration emp\u00eache l\u2019immersion pleine et enti\u00e8re dans l\u2019un ou l\u2019autre des deux espaces-temps. Mais il fonctionne comme un conte. \u00ab C\u2019est important les mots B\u00e9a \u00bb, mart\u00e8le le narrateur, devenu enseignant et \u00e9crivain.
