Africa. <\/strong> <\/span>The French magazine Jeune Afrique reported that Malian President Assimi Goi\u0308ta has appointed a senior officer from the National Guard, Brigadier General Famouke\u0301 Camara, to lead Operation \u201cFoka Kini\u201d (meaning \u201cpurification\u201d in Bambara), tasked with combating the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate.<\/p>\n

The extremist group has reportedly besieged the capital, Bamako, blocking fuel deliveries and causing severe shortages. General Camara\u2019s mission is to win the \u201cfuel war.\u201d<\/p>\n

1. Commander of Operation \u201cFoka Kini\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Jeune Afrique journalist Ali Ousmane Askofare\u0301, Camara is responsible for coordinating military and logistical operations, particularly the protection of fuel convoys.<\/p>\n

A Malian security source told the magazine that results are already visible, with fuel successfully reaching Bamako for over a month without major incidents.<\/p>\n

2. Significant Experience<\/b><\/p>\n

Known for handling sensitive missions, Camara has often been called upon to lead complex operations, such as securing the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations held in Bamako.<\/p>\n

3. Close Ties with Soldiers<\/b><\/p>\n

Jeune Afrique highlights that Camara is regarded as a commander close to his troops, regularly visiting front lines to check on their welfare, encourage them, and offer support.<\/p>\n

He was promoted to brigadier general in June 2024 after about two decades of military service.<\/p>\n

Camara hails from Gounsoulou, a village in the heart of Mande, the historical cradle of the Mali Empire, which produced figures such as Emperor Sundiata Keita and former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.<\/p>\n

Jeune Afrique notes that Camara graduated from the Kati Military Academy and the Koulikoro Combined Arms School, trained at the U.S. Integrated Special Operations University in Florida, completed the Advanced Counterterrorism Operations Course, and attended the French War College in Paris.<\/p>\n

He has earned a strong reputation as a field officer with extensive knowledge of Mali\u2019s diverse regions.<\/p>\n

Camara also served within the State Security Service between 2017 and 2018, gaining substantial experience in intelligence operations.<\/p>\n

8. Chief of the National Guard<\/b><\/p>\n

Since February 2023, he has been Chief of Staff of the National Guard, commanding around 12,000 personnel \u2014 one of Mali\u2019s key security institutions.<\/p>\n
