Ekweremadu, 63, a former ally of ex-Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, is serving a sentence of 9 years and 8 months after being convicted in 2023 of conspiring to exploit a young Nigerian to obtain a kidney for his daughter, Sonia, at a specialized unit in a British hospital.<\/p>\n

The case, which also involved his wife Beatrice and a doctor named Obinna Obeta, marked the first conviction in the UK for organ trafficking under modern slavery laws.<\/p>\n

A Nigerian official delegation led by Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar met last week with officials from the UK Ministry of Justice to discuss the possibility of extraditing Ekweremadu, but London rejected the request.<\/p>\n
