The court’s decision followed a lawsuit filed by a regional research center, which argued that Kenya’s unilateral signing of the agreement contradicted the provisions of the East African Community treaty, which includes eight countries and aims to coordinate trade and economic policies among its members.<\/p>\n

The agreement came into effect in 2024 and aims to facilitate the entry of Kenyan exports, particularly flowers and fruits, into European markets, in exchange for opening the Kenyan market to European products and gradually reducing tariffs over 25 years.<\/p>\n

Observers believe that the issue transcends trade, raising questions about the future of economic integration in East Africa and the group’s ability to negotiate as a unified bloc with major international partners like the European Union.<\/p>\n

The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising eight member states, established to enhance economic, political, and social integration. The EAC has been working towards a common market and customs union to facilitate trade among member countries. The recent court ruling against Kenya’s trade agreement with the EU highlights the complexities of regional trade policies and the necessity for collective negotiations among EAC members.<\/p>\n
