Africa. <\/strong> <\/span>Authorities in the Central African Republic have officially charged political opponent Dominique Erenon with conspiracy after he appeared before an investigating judge in the capital, Bangui.<\/p>\n

He has been placed in Ngaragba prison east of the city, a move that has sparked controversy in political and legal circles.<\/p>\n

Erenon, the head of the Movement for Democracy and the Salvation of the People, was arrested on October 3 after returning to Bangui airport following three years in France. Since that date, he has been held by the research and investigation agency without the nature of the charges against him being disclosed.<\/p>\n

During the first interrogation session on December 17, investigating judge Ze\u0301phirin Yacineba presented him with eight charges, including conspiracy against state security, forming a criminal conspiracy, and incitement to hatred.<\/p>\n

However, his lawyer stated that Erenon rejected all the charges, emphasizing that the case is more political than judicial in nature. The lawyer explained that the judge did not provide any documents to substantiate the charges, merely referencing a list of 52 individuals alleged to have been in contact with Erenon, including Alexandre-Ferdinand Nguendet, the former transitional president, who lives in exile and is facing charges for calling for the overthrow of President Faustin-Archange Touade\u0301ra in June 2023.<\/p>\n

Erenon, a professor specializing in constitutional law, intended to return to teaching at the University of Bangui and resume his political activities, calling for a national dialogue before the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n

His arrest and accusations raise questions about the future of the opposition in the country amid a charged political atmosphere and increasing tensions between the government and its opponents.<\/p>\n
