Senegal secured a 3-1 victory over Sudan in the AFCON Round of 16, advancing to the quarter-finals. Sudan initially took the lead with a goal from Amer Abdullah, but Senegal equalized through Bamba Dieng and later scored two more goals to secure their place in the next round. Africa. <\/strong> <\/span>Senegal triumphed over Sudan (3-1) on Saturday in the opening match of the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), subsequently advancing to the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

The Sudanese team started the match strongly and surprised the Senegalese, the champions of the previous edition.<\/p>\n

In the 6th minute of the match, Amer Abdullah scored the first goal for Sudan with a brilliant shot that found the net of Senegal’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.<\/p>\n

This was the first goal scored by the Sudanese team in the current AFCON, as their only previous goal in the tournament was an own goal by a player from Equatorial Guinea in a match that ended with Sudan winning (1-0).<\/p>\n

Bamba Dieng’s Double<\/b><\/p>\n

Senegal equalized in the 29th minute through Bamba Dieng, who scored with a low shot that found the back of the net past Sudan’s goalkeeper Manjed Al-Nil.<\/p>\n

As the first half neared its end, Bamba Dieng scored Senegal’s second goal (45+3).<\/p>\n

Sudan improved its performance in the second half and nearly scored an equalizer, but Mendy, Senegal’s goalkeeper, excelled and saved a clear chance from Sudan’s Mohamed Said Ahmed in the 52nd minute.<\/p>\n

In the 77th minute, Ibrahim Mbaye added Senegal’s third goal, securing their advancement to the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

With this victory, Senegal moves on to the quarter-finals, while Sudan exits the tournament.<\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that Senegal qualified for the Round of 16 at the top of their group with seven points, ahead of the Democratic Republic of Congo on goal difference, after achieving a resounding victory over Benin (3-0), a positive draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo (1-1), and a win against Botswana (3-0).<\/p>\n

Sudan qualified as one of the best third-placed teams, having earned three points from a victory over Equatorial Guinea, a defeat against Algeria (3-0), and a loss to Burkina Faso (2-0).<\/p>\n

Senegal aims to clinch the title in this edition, relying on its star-studded lineup, and is among the favorites to compete for it. This is also an opportunity for the Lions of Teranga to restore their prestige in the knockout stages after being eliminated in the last edition of AFCON in the Round of 16 following a defeat to Ivory Coast on penalties.<\/p>\n
