{"id":3990,"date":"2026-01-25T22:25:52","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T22:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/en\/home\/gabon-teachers-ready-to-negotiate-after-6-week-strike"},"modified":"2026-01-27T13:37:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T13:37:09","slug":"gabon-teachers-ready-to-negotiate-after-6-week-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/en\/policy\/gabon-teachers-ready-to-negotiate-after-6-week-strike","title":{"rendered":"Gabon: Teachers Ready to Negotiate after 6-Week Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The \u201cSOS Education\u201d movement, which has been leading a teachers\u2019 strike in Gabon for six weeks and has paralyzed the country\u2019s education system, announced its readiness to begin official negotiations with the government under the auspices of the mediator appointed by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, provided that the prerequisites set by the movement for the resumption of classes are met.<\/p>\n<p>This was announced during the movement\u2019s general assembly held in the capital, Libreville, where the striking teachers unanimously approved the president\u2019s appointment of a mediator to facilitate talks between the two sides.<\/p>\n<p>Member of Parliament Jean Gaspard Ntoutoume Ayi explained during the meeting that \u201cdialogue between the government and the \u2018SOS Education\u2019 movement has collapsed, making the need for a mediator clear. The head of state therefore appointed me,\u201d stressing the need to release union leaders before embarking on any negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mayima, one of the movement\u2019s leaders, pointed out that one of the main prerequisites for resuming classes is the release of Marcel Libama and Simon Ndong Edzo, two union members who were imprisoned for supporting the strike. She said: \u201cWe want the government to take the initiative to release the detainees so that we can begin negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The movement also revealed that it has appointed nine negotiators, each representing one of Gabon\u2019s nine provinces, including Honorine Angui Mintsa, who stated: \u201cWe have received an offer to begin negotiations on a protocol to end the crisis.
