This commitment came at the conclusion of his visit to Ouagadougou, which began last Monday, during which he held discussions with Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore, the current chair of the Sahel Alliance that includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.<\/p>\n

The meeting between the two leaders at the presidential palace in Burkina Faso focused on ways to build a “strong bridge” that reconnects the Burkinabe people and institutions with the African Union, while redefining the relationship with the alliance, according to a statement from the Burkinabe presidency. The African Union suspended Burkina Faso’s participation in its activities in early 2022 after the ousting of President Roch Marc Christian Kabore\u0301, requiring a return to constitutional order for the suspension to be lifted. An Open Bet<\/b><\/p>\n

The outcome depends on what Ndayishimiye brings to the upcoming African summit and his ability to translate the openness he demonstrated in Ouagadougou into institutional decisions that end Burkina Faso’s isolation, and potentially that of Mali and Niger later on.<\/p>\n

Yet, this path faces the legacy of sanctions that studies from the Institute for Security Studies (based in South Africa) have shown to be limited in effectiveness, as the suspension of membership since 2019 has not prevented the recurrence of coups in Sudan, Mali, and Burkina Faso itself. This makes the approach of “recognizing the reality on the ground” advocated by the Burundian president a potentially more realistic option for rebuilding bridges, even if its institutional impact is delayed.<\/p>\n
