In this context, the Azawad Liberation Front has emerged as a rebel alliance established in 2024, comprising various Azawadian factions.

The agenda of the front focuses on the pursuit of the right to self-determination for the northern population, advocating for a form of autonomy in the north, within a highly volatile political and security environment.

According to reports, the country was subjected to attacks targeting military areas and bases on April 25, 2026, resulting in the deaths of Defense Minister Sadio Kamara and his wife, along with other casualties. Additionally, sporadic explosions were recorded around Modibo Keita International Airport in the capital, Bamako, and the city of Kidal in the far north fell into the hands of the rebels.

Formation of the Azawad Liberation Front

The announcement of the formation of the Azawad Liberation Front in November 2024 was a direct result of the accumulated security and political challenges faced in northern Mali, reshaping the landscape of armed actors in the region.

In 2017, the group known as the Support Group for Islam and Muslims emerged as a dominant force following the merger of several groups linked to al-Qaeda, leading to an increase in attacks and an expansion of control in northern Mali.

As the security situation deteriorated, Bamako experienced a military coup in August 2020, led by Colonel Assimi Goita, who ousted elected President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on May 25, 2021. This was followed by another coup executed by Goita, which removed transitional President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, claiming they had failed to fulfill their duties and were “seeking to sabotage the transition process in the country.”

Simultaneously, relations between the coup authorities and international partners, particularly France, soured, leading to France’s eventual withdrawal from the country under pressure from the coup leaders and amid rising public opposition to the presence of French forces.

With the withdrawal of French troops in 2022, elements of the Russian Wagner Group entered the scene to fill the security vacuum, as Mali repositioned itself politically after suspending its membership in ECOWAS and calling for the exit of the United Nations mission in 2023.

This shift created field vacuums, particularly in the north, where direct conflict erupted between the Malian army and fighters from active movements in Azawad over control of abandoned bases, exacerbating human losses and forcing tens of thousands of civilians to flee.

In January 2024, the cancellation of the Algiers Agreement signed in 2015 marked a pivotal turning point, reopening fronts of combat with armed groups, including Tuareg factions. Amid this escalation, some Azawadian movements felt the need to restructure their ranks within a more effective unified framework.

In this context, several factions, including the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (Tuareg), the High Council for the Unity of Azawad, and the Arab Azawadian Movement, announced the establishment of a new entity, the Azawad Liberation Front, to serve as a unifying body for the previous components, led by Abbas Ag Intala. The new entity aims to be a new political-military platform that reasserts the demand for self-determination and seeks to enhance influence in northern Mali within a complex and changing regional environment.

Roots of the Conflict

The roots of the conflict in the Azawad region of northern Mali date back a long time, as the Tuareg have sought to establish a state of their own since the early twentieth century. After Mali gained independence from French colonial rule in 1960, these demands intensified.

Northern Mali is primarily inhabited by Tuareg and Arabs, who have social and cultural ties with neighboring countries such as Algeria, Niger, and Mauritania, more than with other components of society in southern Mali.

The first rebellions began in 1962 when the Tuareg launched attacks on government sites, but the army managed to suppress them, leading to a significant displacement of the population and increased tensions. Additionally, waves of drought that struck the region exacerbated the situation due to their severe impact on the lives of nomadic populations.

In 1990, a new rebellion broke out with the participation of Tuareg from northern Niger, leading to the emergence of several armed movements, most notably the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, the Islamic Arab Front for Azawad, and the United Movements and Fronts for Azawad.

Despite signing a peace agreement with some of these groups in 1995, tensions did not cease, and attacks continued intermittently in northern Mali.

Incomplete Independence

In early 2012, following a new wave of attacks led by the Tuareg alongside other armed groups, some affiliated with al-Qaeda, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, led by Bilal Ag Cherif, declared the establishment of an independent state in northern Mali.

At the beginning of the conflict, the movement allied with the Ansar Dine group led by Iyad Ag Ghali, but this alliance was unstable, as clashes soon erupted between the two sides.

The rebels exploited the chaos that followed a military coup in Bamako in March 2012 and managed to seize key cities in the north, such as Kidal, Timbuktu, and Gao. On April 6 of the same year, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad declared the independence of the region.

However, disagreements reemerged, as the Tuareg aimed for autonomy, while Ansar Dine and its allies sought to impose the application of Sharia in the areas under their control. Over time, these groups dominated the course of events, leading to a decline in the role of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad.

In 2013, France intervened militarily at the request of the Malian government, deploying around 4,000 troops to support it.

In 2015, the Algiers Agreement was signed between the government and a coalition of Tuareg groups, aimed at calming the situation, with promises to grant the north more autonomy and improve economic conditions. Additionally, United Nations peacekeeping forces were sent to the region to support stability.

The Largest Coordinated Attack in Years

Last Saturday, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, linked to al-Qaeda, and the Azawad Liberation Front claimed responsibility for a series of attacks targeting several sites in Mali, including the city of Kati and the capital’s airport in Bamako, as well as areas in the north such as Mopti, Sévaré, and Gao, on April 25, 2026. These attacks were described as among the boldest operations against the government led by the Malian army.

For its part, the Malian army confirmed that it managed to repel the attacks targeting several sites in Bamako and its surroundings, noting the deaths of hundreds of attackers and the commencement of extensive search operations in the capital and its vicinity, as well as in other parts of the country, including gold mining areas.

In contrast, the armed group reported controlling the cities of Kidal and Gao in the north of the country.

Find more news and analyses on Africa on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press.
