Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>In light of the escalating armed attacks and increasing security tensions in Mali, attention is turning to the ability of the transitional military authorities to contain the situation, especially with the recurrence of operations in sensitive areas and signs of disruption in the military and political landscape.<\/p>\n

According to an expert on Sahel and West African affairs, the attack that occurred on the morning of April 25 was surprising, adding that it represented a “shock” to the transitional military government.<\/p>\n

In an interview with a local source, he noted that the developments on the ground preceded the attack by days, pointing to attempts to regain control of the situation, particularly in the capital Bamako. However, events accelerated with the departure of several officials, especially after the assassination of the defense minister.<\/p>\n

The expert explained that clashes are still ongoing in the city of Kidal in the north of the country, describing it as the main city in that region, where the Azawad Movement forces are active and have allied to launch the attack.<\/p>\n

He added that the transitional government is seeking to regain control of cities like Se\u0301gou and Gao and their suburbs as part of its efforts to regain the initiative on the ground.<\/p>\n

The Future of Military Rule<\/b><\/p>\n

In response to a question about whether the days of military rule are numbered, the expert ruled out this scenario, clarifying that the situation is more complex.<\/p>\n

He stated that the absence of the head of the military council in Mali, Assimi Goi\u0308ta, from public appearances following the assassination of Defense Minister Sadio Camara raised questions, before he later appeared to reassure citizens and visit the minister’s family, a move he considered “evidence of an attempt to assert control.”<\/p>\n

Regarding Bamako’s allies, the expert pointed to cooperation agreements with Russia that include training and emergency assistance.<\/p>\n

He explained that field support was provided at the beginning of the events, especially in Kidal and Bamako, with the participation of armed elements. However, the subsequent withdrawal from Kidal came due to the difficulty of controlling the situation.<\/p>\n

He confirmed that this cooperation has contributed over the past years to strengthening the government’s influence and control over several areas, but it now faces increasing challenges with the rise in attacks.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Mali witnessed coordinated attacks carried out by armed groups, which included violent clashes and explosions in several areas, resulting in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara.<\/p>\n

Media reports indicate that the attacks were carried out by the “Azawad Liberation Front,” which includes fighters from Tuareg and Arab tribes demanding the separation of their regions in the north or obtaining expanded autonomy, in addition to armed groups loyal to al-Qaeda known as “Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin.”<\/p>\n
