Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The head of the transitional military council, Assimi Goita, confirmed in his first appearance following the initial attacks targeting several cities in Mali on Saturday, April 25, that the security situation in the country is “extremely serious” but “under control.”<\/p>\n

In a televised address to the nation lasting about ten minutes, Goita reviewed the developments that occurred over the weekend, describing the attacks as “coordinated and highly dangerous,” and affirming that the Malian armed forces repelled them and dealt a “strong blow” to the attackers who sought to spread violence.<\/p>\n

He explained that the rapid intervention of the army and the efficiency of its personnel, along with maintaining the cohesion of the command structure, contributed to thwarting what he described as a “deadly plan,” noting that a large number of attackers were neutralized.<\/p>\n

The head of the military council confirmed that military deployment has been reinforced in the affected areas and that the situation is now “under control,” with ongoing search and reconnaissance operations and intelligence gathering, in addition to continuing security operations.<\/p>\n

Goita sought to reassure citizens during his speech, emphasizing that Mali has chosen the path of “sovereignty and dignity,” considering this choice to reflect a clear national will, despite its costs. He added that this path remains the only way to ensure a free, just, and prosperous future for upcoming generations.<\/p>\n

He also affirmed that national revival is a fundamental condition for continuing the fight against terrorism, stressing that the armed forces will continue their operations until security is permanently restored across the country.<\/p>\n

Goita called on citizens to unite and stand together against division and fragmentation, noting that the strength of the nation is enhanced in times of hardship. He warned against the spread of rumors, emphasizing that the country needs collective awareness and responsibility, not panic, before concluding his speech by praising the quality of cooperation with strategic partners, primarily the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n

In his first public move, Goita met with the Russian ambassador in the capital Bamako, at a time when Russia, Mali’s strategic partner, had withdrawn its forces as rebels advanced.<\/p>\n

A post on social media from Goita’s office stated that the two discussed the current situation and the strong partnership between Bamako and Moscow, and that the Russian ambassador “reaffirmed his country’s commitment to support Mali in combating international terrorism.” He also visited a hospital in Bamako to comfort soldiers injured in the fighting, without making any statements during the visit.<\/p>\n

Armed groups from the Support Group for Islam and Muslims and the Azawad Liberation Front launched attacks on several cities on April 25 and 26, in a significant escalation that resulted in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Kamara and the rebels taking control of the city of Kidal.<\/p>\n

In a video message broadcast on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, affiliated with al-Qaeda, bragged about the violence that occurred on Saturday, describing it as revenge for drone strikes and other attacks carried out by Malian forces.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson, Bina Diara, threatened to impose a siege on Bamako, a city with a population of 4 million. He stated in the message: “Bamako is besieged from all sides starting today.”<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Russia announced that armed and separatist groups in Mali are reorganizing after Moscow’s forces helped thwart what it described as an attempted coup on Saturday, preventing the rebels from seizing key positions, including the presidential palace.<\/p>\n

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated: “The enemy has not abandoned its aggressive intentions and is currently reorganizing its ranks.” The statement added that Russian forces are conducting active reconnaissance operations to destroy the rebels’ field camps and are on high alert to repel any further attacks. Mali sought support from Russia after expelling French and United Nations forces following coups in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n
