First aid and humanitarian support were provided to the survivors upon their arrival at the landing point, in partnership with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

New data from the International Organization for Migration indicated concerns over the deaths or disappearances of more than 180 people in the latest shipwreck incidents in the Mediterranean Sea, raising the total number of deaths in 2026 to nearly 1,000 so far.

The recurrence of migrant drownings in the Mediterranean, most recently off the coast of Tobruk, has sparked widespread anger and discontent, amid rising criticism of the lack of fundamental solutions to halt the smuggling networks that push migrants into deadly journeys.

Activists on social media expressed their shock at the continuation of these tragedies, considering that what is happening is no longer individual incidents but a “recurring humanitarian disaster,” demanding stricter oversight of smuggling networks and enhanced international cooperation to save lives at sea, rather than merely conducting rescue operations after tragedies occur.

Others called for harsher penalties for human traffickers and those involved in smuggling operations, demanding that these penalties reach the maximum, including the death penalty, arguing that these crimes are no longer classified as ordinary cases but touch on national security and amount to “high treason.”

These calls emphasized that the proliferation of smuggling networks and their transformation into transnational organizations necessitate a more stringent security and judicial approach to put an end to the exploitation that leads to the deaths of hundreds of migrants annually at sea.

Proponents of these demands stressed the need to establish a specialized prosecution and court to address human trafficking cases, ensuring the acceleration of judicial procedures and more effective pursuit of those involved in light of the rising what they described as “atrocious crimes” related to this issue.

In contrast, human rights advocates warned that the continuation of these disasters reflects a failure in managing the issue of irregular migration at both regional and international levels, calling for more effective mechanisms to protect migrants and enhance safe and legal migration pathways to reduce loss of life in the Mediterranean.

Libya is a major transit point for migrants, many of whom come from sub-Saharan African countries, risking their lives to reach Europe via the desert and sea, fleeing conflicts, poverty, and worsening economic crises.

Find more news and analyses on Africa on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press.
