Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The European Union has expressed “serious concern” regarding recent developments in the Tigray region (northern Ethiopia), urging all parties to immediately de-escalate and avoid any actions that could undermine the fragile peace agreement signed in 2022.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for foreign affairs, the EU called for restraint, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining the permanent cessation of hostilities agreement reached in Pretoria in November 2022.<\/p>\n

It also warned against any moves that could threaten the peace agreement, stressing that preventing a return to conflict is “imperative.”<\/p>\n

The EU highlighted the importance of resolving disputes between the parties through political dialogue, asserting that a resurgence of conflict would have devastating consequences for a region still recovering from a two-year war that ended with the signing of the Pretoria agreement.<\/p>\n

This statement comes amid renewed tensions and rising fears of instability in northern Ethiopia, where recent developments have raised concerns about the sustainability of the peace process and the potential for a new escalation.<\/p>\n

The Tigray region is entering a new phase of political tension, with increasing disputes between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front regarding the future of the region’s interim administration; this places the peace agreement under a real test.<\/p>\n

The crisis extends beyond the relationship between Mekelle (the capital of Tigray) and Addis Ababa, reaching into Tigray itself. There is growing criticism of the front for its monopolization of power and refusal to involve other political forces in the transitional process.<\/p>\n

More than three years after the signing of the Pretoria agreement in November 2022, which ended the bloody civil war in northern Ethiopia, the peace arrangements remain fragile and susceptible to collapse under the pressure of competition for regional power, amid varying interpretations of the agreement’s terms.<\/p>\n

The roots of the current crisis trace back to the federal government’s decision to extend the term of the interim administration led by General Tadese Worede for an additional year on April 8.<\/p>\n

At that time, the Prime Minister’s office announced that General Tadese Worede’s term as head of the interim administration in Tigray had been extended for another year, effective from April 9, 2026.<\/p>\n

Tadese was first appointed on April 8, 2025, succeeding Getachew Reda.<\/p>\n

Although the decision was based on constitutional legal frameworks, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front considered it a unilateral action that violates the spirit and text of the Pretoria agreement, which stipulates that the transitional administration should be managed through consensus among the concerned parties.<\/p>\n

The front believes that the continuation of the interim administration without elections or genuine restructuring reflects an attempt to politically marginalize it, especially in light of the absence of a clear path to restore full civilian rule in the region.<\/p>\n

It has clearly expressed this position in several statements, asserting that the elected regional council prior to the war remains the legitimate source of authority, demanding its reactivation. Reports indicate that the front has already supported its leader Debretsion Gebremichael to lead the regional administration.<\/p>\n

However, the front shows increasing enthusiasm to regain control of the fertile western Tigray region, bordering Eritrea and Sudan.<\/p>\n

In a new escalation, the front announced on April 19 the reactivation of the pre-war regional council, which is considered a direct challenge to federal authority and effectively undermines the legitimacy of the interim administration.<\/p>\n

This move not only reflects a political rejection but also indicates an attempt to regain institutional control over the region and to reproduce the previous political system.<\/p>\n

This step carries deeper implications, as it reflects a loss of trust in the transitional path and the front’s belief that the federal government does not intend to fully implement the agreement, particularly regarding power-sharing, troop redeployment, and resolving regional disputes.<\/p>\n

For his part, Tadese rejected the front’s objections to the extension, leaving the interim administration in a contested position, as was the case during his predecessor Getachew Reda’s tenure.<\/p>\n

The military leader confirmed that he does not intend to leave the region despite the front’s rejection of his leadership, but the course of developments in the coming days and weeks remains unclear.<\/p>\n

According to reports, the civil war that raged between 2020 and 2022 between the forces led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and the Ethiopian National Army resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands due to direct violence, the collapse of healthcare, and famine.<\/p>\n

The war erupted due to the breakdown of relations between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, an armed movement that transformed into a political party that dominated Ethiopian political life for nearly three decades, and Abiy Ahmed, who ended the front’s dominance when he was appointed Prime Minister in 2018.<\/p>\n
